PREFACE

28th Congress of the European Society of Cardiology / World Congress of Cardiology Dear Readers,

The Editorial Board of the Netherlands Heart Journal is very pleased to present its annual supplement on this year's meeting of the European Society of Cardiology. This year, the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) joined forces with the World Heart Federation in organising the World Congress of Cardiology in Barcelona, Spain from 2 to 6 September 2006. In this supplement, we report on the 10 most interesting sessions presented at the ESC meeting: 2 hot line sessions, 2 clinical trial updates, 3 main sessions and 3 satellites have been fully covered. Most of the studies presented during the hot line sessions were truly hot and revealed new data. A discussion by an expert in the field followed each presentation, which resulted in enjoyable and very useful sessions as both positive and negative studies were placed in perspective. In the main sessions, experts provided reviews of topics related to current basic and clinical cardiovascular research, epidemiology and clinical cardiology, as a perspective for daily clinical practice. In the satellite sessions, usually one major topic was discussed in depth by a prominent

specialist. The content of the sessions has been summarised by experts in the field. We greatly appreciate the efforts of the authors who were willing to write these reports. In this way, the supplement gives a good representation of the most important topics of the ESC meeting at the World Congress in Barcelona. We hope that you will once again enjoy reading the ESC supplement. i
