Dear Sir,?The expression used in. your note on my paper on "Wood's operation for the cure of hernia, gives one the erroneous impression that Dr. Fayrer's is a simpler manner of performing the same operation. I do not here wish to discuss the merits of the two operations, hut merely to point out that they are on an entirely different principle (Dr. Fayrer's being, if I remember rightly, a modification of and improvement on Vufzer's), and it can hardly be said correctly that one is a simpler manner of performing the operation than the other. If, however, your meaning is that you think Fayrer's a simpler operation (and I suppose you imply equally good or better) than Wood's, that is a point that can hardly be settled without further experience.* Yours truly, a II. * Dr. Caylev is so far right. It would have been more correct had we said that Fayrer's operation seemed to us more simple than Wood's. With regard to the comparative merits of the two operations, however, we said nothing ; so that the words of the note referred to scarcely seem to us to bear the interpretation that Dr. attaches to I, ill",
