Welcome Address Dear Colleagues and Friends, We are delighted to welcome you warmly to the XLV ERA-EDTA Congress in Stockholm. The Scientific Committee, chaired by Prof. Norbert Lameire, has produced an excellent and varied programme. The latest advances in both basic and clinical research as well as up-to-date information on clinical care in general will be discussed in the form of lectures, mini-lectures, symposia and courses. In addition, current clinical problems will also be discussed during the Industry Symposia. A great number of abstracts has been submitted and the Paper Selection Committee, chaired by Dr. Peter Stenvinkel, has worked hard to choose the best abstracts for presentation as oral communications or posters. Compared with previous ERA-EDTA congresses, the number of oral communications will be increased; furthermore morning and afternoon poster sessions will take place without any other parallel activities. Attending the congress is also a fantastic opportunity to explore the Swedish capital. Stockholm is a beautiful city built on 14 islands, surrounded by Lake Mälaren in the West and the Baltic Sea to the East, which means you are never far away from the water. Visitors will enjoy its rich cultural heritage and affection for contemporary design. Home to one of Europe’s best-preserved mediaeval city centres, Stockholm has a wealth of museums, art galleries, theatres, attractions and events to suit all tastes. May is also a great month to enjoy the city as it springs into bloom with long light evenings. During your stay, don’t miss the chance to visit the Stockholm archipelago: comprising 24,000 islands that range from populated resorts to completely deserted islets, it is a spectacular not-to-be-missed experience. We very much hope that you have a thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable visit to Stockholm for the XLV ERA-EDTA Congress.
