NEWS Weight gain is greater with some antidepressants than others, US study finds Ingrid Torjesen London

Doctors might want to consider the propensity of different antidepressants for increasing a patient’s weight when prescribing to people in whom weight gain could have adverse health consequences, a group of US researchers has said.

The recommendation came after a study that they conducted that found that some antidepressants were associated with greater weight gain than others over a 12 month period. The Boston based researchers reviewed the electronic health records of a large New England healthcare system to extract prescribing data and record the weights of 19 244 adults aged 18 to 65 who were prescribed one of 11 common antidepressants for at least three months. The 11 antidepressants were: amitriptyline hydrochloride, bupropion hydrochloride, citalopram hydrobromide, duloxetine hydrochloride, escitalopram oxalate, fluoxetine hydrochloride, mirtazapine, nortriptyline hydrochloride, paroxetine hydrochloride, venlafaxine hydrochloride, and sertraline hydrochloride. To test the sensitivity of their assessment model the researchers also assessed weight changes in 3366 patients who were prescribed the anti-asthma medication albuterol sulfate and the anti-obesity drugs orlistat, phentermine hydrochloride, and sibutramine hydrochloride.

The results, published this week in JAMA Psychiatry, showed that patients who were prescribed bupropion, or one of the tricyclics nortriptyline and amitriptyline, gained significantly less weight over 12 months than those who were prescribed the
