News & Reports antimicrobial resistance

US industry engages with voluntary AMR initiative THE Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA has reported that it has secured ‘full industry engagement’ with its antimicrobial resistance (AMR) strategy. In December last year, the FDA asked the animal pharmaceutical industry in the USA to voluntarily remove growth enhancement and feed conversion efficiency indications from the uses of medically important antibiotics that were also approved by the FDA for animal production purposes (VR, December 21/28, 2013, vol 173, p 595). It also asked for companies to phase in a requirement for veterinary oversight of the remaining therapeutic uses of such drugs. In March this year, it reported a good response to the initiative, with all but one of the 26 animal medicines companies concerned committing to do as the FDA had requested (VR, April 5, 2014, vol 174, p 341). On June 30, the FDA reported that the remaining company had agreed in writing

to engage with its judicious use strategy. Giving an update on other progress with the scheme, the FDA said that 31 approvals for affected products had now been withdrawn and one marketing status change (from over-the-counter to prescription-only) was pending. Companies have a three-year transition phase to bring in the changes. The FDA has made an online chart available at www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/ SafetyHealth/AntimicrobialResistance/ JudiciousUseofAntimicrobials/ucm390429. htm, listing the 283 products affected and detailing the changes made to their indications and marketing authorisations. The chart will be regularly updated and the FDA says that it will also publish sixmonthly progress reports summarising current and pending actions taken by the companies to align with its guidance. doi: 10.1136/vr.g4459
