In this issue of the Orthopedic Clinics of North America, we present several interesting articles in the Upper Extremity section reviewing a number of upper extremity conditions. Gutowski and I present a detailed review of the evaluation and medical management of osteoporosis, a condition that continues to grow in prevalence. The upper extremity is a common site to encounter osteoporosis-related fragility fractures and surgeons treating these injuries would benefit from an understanding of the symptoms, evaluation, and medical treatment options. Abzug and Kozin provide a comprehensive review of brachial plexus birth palsies. Despite being well recognized, brachial plexus birth palsies continue to be relatively common, potentially resulting in permanent deficits in upper extremity function.
