CLINICAL

PRIZE

The 1991 Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology Clinical Prize, which is given annually to the authors of a paper published in the journal and judged to be the most innovative clinical paper and of the highest scientific quality, has been given to E. B. Ringelstein, B. Kahlscheuer, E. Niggemeyer and S. M. Otis for their paper titled "Transcranial Doppler Sonography: Anatomical Landmarks and Normal Velocity Values" from pages 745-761 of Volume 16. The biographies of the authors are given below.

versity Hospital. He investigated fiber spectra of spinal cord tracts in normals and various degenerative diseases. After a subsequent 2.5-years residency in Psychiatry, he began his neurological residency in the department of Professor Poeck at the University Hospital RWTH in Aachen. His main scientific interest was in the field ofcerebrovascular disease and stroke. This was particularly stimulated by a subsequent 1.5-years residency in the Department of Neuroradiology with

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES Dr. E. B. Ringelstein is a graduate of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, where he also took part in his internship in Neurology under the guidance of Professor Franco Regli. After a 15month military service, Dr. Ringelstein conducted a l-year research fellowship with Professor Michael Schrrder in Neuropathology, also at the Mainz Uni321

Professor Hermann Zeumer. He received certification in Neurology and Psychiatry by Board in September 1983. In 1984, Dr. Ringelstein became Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University Hospital of Aachen, and in 1986 Associate Professor of Neurology. In 1986, he went on sabbatical in the Department of Neurology, Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, NC, USA, with Professor William McKinney. In 1987, he went on sabbatical for stroke research in the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, La Jolla, CA, USA, with Dr. Laurence A. Harker and Dr. Shirley M. Otis. In 1989, Dr. Ringelstein went on an additional sabbatical in Epileptology with Professor Christian Elger in the University Hospital of Bonn. Since 1986, he has been nominated Leading Associate Attending of the Department of Neurology in Aachen. In 1992, Dr. Ringelstein has been selected to become the Head and Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital in Mtinster. Dr. Ringelstein's interest has been focused on vascular disease and, specifically, pathophysiology of stroke and introduction of noninvasive ultrasound diagnostic techniques. He has published numerous papers on stroke mechanisms in carotid occlusions, patterns of infarctions on computerized tomography, extracranial Doppler sonography and B-mode imaging, as well as transcranial Doppler sonography. It was his main intention to link angiological findings of the brain arteries with brain morphology during modern imaging techniques, including MRI, SPECT and PET imaging. Dr. Ringelstein is on the board of the Research Group of Neurosonology of the WFN, a member or fellow of various national and international scientific societies in Europe and in the USA. He is also Reviewer for a number of European and American scientific neurological journals. In 1985, Dr. Ringelstein organized the International Symposium of the Research Group in Aachen, "Diagnostic Ultrasound in Neurology, Neurosurgery and Neuropediatrics." He edited a book in 1987 with Springer Publishers entitled New Trends in Diagnosis and Management of Stroke.

sities of Cologne (1980-1983) and Aachen (19831987). She completed her internship in surgery, internal medicine and neurology and graduated from the RWTH, University of Aachen, in June 1989. During her medical thesis, she was strongly involved in the generation of data concerning the anatomical landmarks on the cerebral vasculature in the skull for transcranial Doppler sonography. In 1987, she started to work in a neurological rehabilitation center in Bonn as an assistant to Dr. Janzik, and is currently doing her residency in this hospital.

Dr. E. Niggemeyer received her medical education at the University Hospital RWTH, Aachen, from 1981 to 1988. During her dissertation in the Department of Neurology at Aachen, she learned to perform transcranial Doppler sonography by herself and applied it with new techniques to a large number of normal subjects of different ages and sex. Since 1988, Dr. Niggemeyer has worked in the Department of Cardiology at the St. Vinzenz-Hospital, Paderborn, to perform her postdoctoral training.

Dr. S. M. Otis is a graduate of the Tuft's School of Medicine in Boston, MA, USA. She completed a residency and fellowship in neurology at the New England Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Otis practiced neurology in the Boston area until she moved to San Diego where she became Professor of Neurology at the University of California. In 1974, she moved to the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation where she became Medical Director of the Vascular Laboratory, and in 1980 Head of the Division of Neurology. Dr. Otis' interests have been in vascular disease and, specifically, stroke and the advancement of noninvasive diagnostic techniques. She is the author of numerous publications in transcranial Doppler and other noninvasive techniques. Dr. Otis is on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Neuroimaging, Advisory Board, School of Cardiovascular Technology, Grossmont College, and Board of Directors, American Medical Imaging Company. She is also a Member of the Christian Doppler Society, Distinguished Member, International Pavlovian Society, and a Member of the Board of Directors, Scripps Clinic Medical Group.
