Tribute to Ted Martonen

Ted Martonen, a pioneer in aerosol deposition modeling and the development of realistic lung morphology models in 3D, passed away in January, 2014. Ted was born in 1943 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He received B.S. degrees in Applied Mathematics and Engineering Mechanics from the University of Michigan, an M.S. degree in Applied Mathematics from Michigan State University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biophysics from the University of Rochester. Much of his Ph.D. work under the supervision of Prof. Gunter Oberdoster was performed in Germany. Most of his professional career was spent at the US EPA National Health and Environmental Effect Research Laboratory in Research Triangle Park, NC. The author of more than 200 technical publications, the high quality of his work was recognized when he received the Smithsonian Institution Award in Medicine in 1997. Ted was an original member of ISAM and was a regular at the congresses. His professional activities included serving on the editorial boards of several journals including the Journal of Aerosol Medicine. Those of us who knew and worked with Ted remember a true individual who was passionate about science and interested in the world. He will be missed.
