Treatment of Phthisis by Iodide of Potassium. -Dr. B. W. Foster of Birmigham states :?In my opinion, the iodide of potassium acts in chronic phthisis by increasing the secretion of pancreatic juice, and in this way promoting the assimilation of fat. In favour of this view we have the authority of Claude Bernard,, who has shown experimentally that iodide of potassium is freely eliminated by the pancreas. Not long after mv experiments with the iodide, I discovered that ether had a still greater power of increasing the activity of the pancreas, and I find ether, either in mixture or as etherised cod-liver oil, so valuable in the treatment of phthisis, that I now only prescribe the iodide when ether is not borne, or for patients presenting the evidences of hereditary disease.?The Lancet.
