TREATMENT OP CHOLERA. To the

Editor,

"

Indian Medical Gazette."

outbreak of cholera has lately visited the natives of the Bazaar here in connection with the Fair at Oojein, held only every twelve years. On former occasions, parties returning have undergone an unintentional quarantine owing to the distance, but now the railway brought them back in six hours. They evaded measures adopted to keep them out by taking tickets to other stations and walking in to their homes. Of those not admitted to hospital, for this is now optional, in all 337 cases, only G9 recovered, about 20 per cent. This was because they refused treatment, or only reported the case just before death. But out of 58 cases that were treated in an hospital erected for the purpose, 46 recovered, or 80 per cent., and this would have been higher had the cases been seen earlier. The treatment adopted was as follows :?Mist, cretae : sine, op., and camphor gr. opium gr. 1, assafoetida gr. 2, Blk. pepper gi\ 3, as pills if seen before collapse. After collapse had supervened, cold applications to abdomen?cold drinks in small quantities but without stint, and a pill of calomel gr. 1, or red iodide of mercury gr. with ext. cannabis indica gr. given every hour or so, three pills generally sufficed, and then for promoting the excretion of urine?ol. terebinth in m. xv doses every hour or so according to the severity of the case. I tried all diuretics, but found the stimulant plan best. I also gave nitrite soda, nitro-glycerine and other drugs, but found none so efficacious as those mentioned above.
