Editorial

To pause for a moment Being at the helm of the European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics for more than 17 years, Robert Gurny was more than just the editor in chief of EJPB. He has been an outstanding scientist in the field of pharmaceutical research that had the ambition to insure that the community working in the field of pharmaceutical sciences, with its plethora of aspects in science and technology, had an appropriate publishing organ. His task was all but simple. While there were already well-established journals in the field at that time, EJPB had not even been listed by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI), and consequently had no impact factor. This was a major disadvantage for scientists working in the field intending to publish their science in the journal and a severe handicap for the journal in terms of attracting outstanding papers. It was one of Robert’s major accomplishments to change the situation such that the journal was listed in the ISI rankings. As a consequence, the journal has attracted much more attention and improved its visibility in the field over recent years. Another secret to success has been the ‘Geneva Office’, as we named the editorial office that Robert and Michael Möller established together with editorial assistants, which made the life of editors and authors much easier. Even major changes, such as switching from paper to electronic submission years ago, were streamlined to the point of being almost imperceptible. Over the years, Robert and his team made EJPB one of the premier scientific publishing organs in the field of pharmaceutical sciences.

Robert is handing the journal over in excellent shape with high standards in science and editorial professionalism. Maybe it is the right time to pause for a moment and ask what the future will bring for EJPB, its authors and its readership. First of all, we will work hard to make the move of the editorial office from Geneva to Regensburg as smooth as possible and to provide the community with the professional support that it is accustomed to. With respect to the future direction of the journal, we do want to keep the high scientific standards that have been established over recent years and cover topics of high scientific relevance. The pharmaceutical sciences are rich in cutting edge research and technology, and have increasingly strong links to other disciplines such as engineering, materials- and medical sciences. EJPB wants to provide a forum for authors and readers to discuss and comment on results of major significance in pharmaceutical sciences and concomitantly help to explore the increasingly complex interdisciplinary intersections with neighboring fields.
