He says that students from 61 countries signed up to the first of the three MOOCs that ScHARR has developed, which focuses on sustainable healthy diets. ‘It was a mix of dietitians, nutritionists and other health professionals including nurses,’ he says. ‘The audience for most MOOCs is varied.’ But what does a university get from providing courses for free? ‘There are two main drivers,’ says Mr Blackmore. ‘First, we attract new students. Second, there is reputation and branding. We have to ensure our name is out there.’ Many questions about MOOCs remain, such as how, if at all, they can be validated. ‘How do you assess the students’ performance on a MOOC?’ says Mr Blackmore. ‘Can you include it on your CV?’ However, Mr Blackmore is confident that universities could look different in ten years’ time because of MOOCs NS Daniel Allen is a freelance journalist RESOURCES Complete list of MOOCs www.mooc-list.com Global directory of MOOCs www.moocs.co Government review of MOOCs tinyurl.com/BISreviewsMOOCs

Petra Kendall-Raynor on an important annual conference

Time to share good practice Chief executive of the Florence Nightingale Foundation Elizabeth Robb says nurses may feel the profession has yet again taken a knock due to unfavourable headlines over the past year. As a result, she wants nurses attending the foundation’s annual conference to take something away from it to re-energise their workplace. Ms Robb was part of the National Advisory Group that guided the review process led by Sir Bruce Keogh into 14 hospitals revealed to have higher than expected mortality rates.

THE CONFERENCE WILL COVER PATIENT SAFETY AND INTEGRATED CARE – Elizabeth Robb

‘One of the things that struck me was the necessity for hospitals experiencing difficulties to ask for help. I do know from the inside what it is like to join an organisation that has been in the headlines.’ She is a great advocate of evidence-based healthcare and helped to introduce staff checklists, also known as care bundles, as part of a care improvement programme at North West London Hospitals NHS Trust. ‘We had a masterclass on the care bundles at a previous conference,’ says Ms Robb, ‘and it was instrumental in helping one nurse to introduce the scheme at her own acute trust.’ The 2014 Florence Nightingale Foundation conference on February 27/28 at the Queen

Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London, aims to help nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals to be inspired, energised and motivated. Ms Robb says the themes of the conference will be patient safety and integrated care. Speakers will include NHS England director of nursing for Midlands and East, Ruth May, and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust chief executive Dame Julie Moore. RCN general secretary Peter Carter will be giving a masterclass on leadership, while Helene Donnelly, who raised concerns when she worked in the emergency department at Stafford Hospital, will be talking about her current role as an ambassador for cultural change at Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Partnership NHS Trust. Ms Robb says the theme of integrated care will address common issues of service transformation, joined-up health and social care, and care closer to home. There will also be a panel of the chief nursing officers from all four UK countries, along with Nursing and Midwifery Council chief executive Jackie Smith, who will take part in a session on sustaining compassion in practice NS Petra Kendall-Raynor is a freelance journalist For more details go to www.florencenightingale. glasgows.co.uk
