The thyroid field has benefited from a wide spectrum of recent advances that have not only allowed us to acquire a better understanding of thyroid diseases but have also permitted refinement of our management strategies. These advances have involved the areas of both benign and malignant thyroid diseases. We are privileged to have a collation of contributions from authors who are well known in their fields, and who have provided us with insightful, stimulating, state-of-the-art analyses of some of the areas affected by these recent advances. In addition to being clinically relevant, the articles presented are diverse and farranging, spanning topics as varied as ethical issues arising during management of thyroid diseases, an update about thyroid cancer staging, a review of the implications of serum TSH concentrations for the diagnosis and management of thyroid cancer, and an examination of fatigue in thyroid cancer survivors. Some of the articles provide much food for thought, as they discuss topics about which the pace of recent advances has been quite rapid and divergent and has thus led to a range of opinions, such as the use of molecular diagnostics for the assessment of indeterminate thyroid nodules, and alternative surgical approaches to the thyroid gland. Some of the material also raises controversial ethical issues that have been subject to debate, and about which differences of opinion persist, such as considering trials of observation in selected patients with thyroid cancer and the topic of universal screening for thyroid disease in pregnancy. We are especially indebted to the authors who have applied their energy and expertise to their articles and have provided extremely useful clinical and basic science information. We would also like to thank the editorial staff from Elsevier for their proficiency and thoroughness. As guest editors, we have derived significant pleasure and benefit from our interactions with the editors and authors. We have truly learned
