The Third Dedicated CSPS Annals Michael S. Wong, MD

T

his Annals of Plastic Surgery supplement marks the third California Society of Plastic Surgeons (CSPS) publication featuring abstracts presented at the 63rd Annual Meeting of the CSPS held at the San Francisco Westin St. Francis Hotel on May 24 to 27, 2013. All manuscripts have undergone peer review through their initial selection for presentation by the Scientific Program Committee, the interactive discussion after podium presentation, and scrutiny by reviewers of the CSPS-Annals Review Committee before final executive editorial review and copyediting by the Annals. Subject matter addressed in this third year’s issue once again testifies to the breadth of our specialty, highlighting innovation and new technologies used in our operating rooms, practices, and educational programs. In addition, it reminds of plastic surgery’s leadership role in the fields of allotransplantation and the care of our injured service men and women. For the first time, this CSPS work contains the manuscript that won Best Paper honors, a randomized controlled trial comparing patient-controlled tissue expansion with air versus standard saline tissue expansion for breast reconstruction by Zeidler et al. It also highlights the keynote address for the inaugural Garry Brody, MD Family Lectureship given by LCDR Valerio, ‘‘From Battlefield to StatesideVThe Reconstructive Journey of Our Wounded Warriors.’’ Topics covering the entire body are highlighted by manuscripts involving surgery of the head and the neck, the breast, the trunk, as well as the upper and the lower extremity. Craniofacial manuscripts investigating the incidence of oral clefts and secondary surgeries after isolated cleft palate repair in California are presented in addition to the use of tissue expansion and implants for ear reconstruction. Breast reconstruction articles evaluating satisfaction among minorities as well as after total skin-sparing mastectomy and immediate expander implant reconstruction are included. The role of rigid sternal fixation in the prophylaxis and treatment of sternal complications is reviewed. The benefits of early plastic surgery involvement in upper extremity necrotizing fasciitis management are demonstrated. Improvements in lower extremity reconstructive techniques are emphasized in a description for extending the gastrocnemius f lap arc of rotation in addition to a fascia-only anterolateral thigh f lap to provide for better contour. This wide range of topics presented testifies to the broad scope of our specialty and bears witness to the creativity and thoughtfulness of our CSPS members. Our California residency training programs continue to be important in the innovative work presented at our annual meeting and in this supplement. Nearly every manuscript in this issue has resident or medical student involvement acknowledged through authorship, many as first author. Former Chief Resident Thomas Satterwhite, the 2013 winner of the Best Resident Paper, provided further data validating Stanford University’s online self-directed microsurgery resident training curriculum. This training program continues to lead the way in creative ways of improving microsurgical training through use of its SMaRT program and the development of models for teaching DIEP f lap dissection, both featured in this issue. Special thanks to the third CSPS-Annals Review Committee (Darrell Brooks, Joseph Carey, James Chang, James Chao, Jesus Garcia, Julio Garcia, Amanda Gosman, Scott Hansen, Lynn Jeffers, Debra Johnson, David Kahn, Susan Kaweski, Rohit Khosla, Mark Labowe, Gordon Lee, Peter Lorenz, Mark Mofid, Lee Pu, and George Rudkin) for their thorough reviews and discerning comments that shaped the manuscripts of this supplement. Additional thanks to the Annals editor, managing editor, and staff for their continuing support of this collaboration. We are pleased with this May 2014 Annals supplement because it showcases work of our CSPS members and speaks to a deepening relationship between the CSPS and Annals. The 64th Annual Meeting of the CSPS to be held on May 23 to 26, 2013, at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa promises to offer a strong scientific program cochaired by Lynn Jeffers and Gordon Lee. This scientific meeting of the fourth CSPS program to offer presenters the opportunity to publish their work in a dedicated CSPS supplement of Annals set for April 2015. We look forward to further strengthening this relationship between the CSPS and Annals with the next CSPS-Annals publication.
