ABSTRACT

A simple but useful technique to aid in the correction of many renal lesions is illustrated.

FIG. l. Standard O'Conor rectal shield. Hole adjacent to finger cot is manipulated easily over kidney and around hilus.

FIG. 3. Heminephrectomy using in situ hypothermia

The O'Conor rectal shield can isolate the kidney when hypothermia is used. The sheath fits nicely around the hilus, permitting ice to be packed around the kidney. If desired, the severed finger cot extension provides access to tapes around the renal vessels. The technique is shown in figures 1 to 3. Since renal hypothermia can effectively increase functional tolerance of the kidney to ischemia any technique to make in situ renal hypothermia more applicable should result in its greater use. We recommend this aid because it is effective and easily accomplished with readily available materials.

Fm. 2. O'Conor sheath in position around kidney

Frequently, many renal lesions once treated by nephrectomy can be corrected using in situ hypothermia. 1 We describe a simple, non-original technique useful in hypothermal renal surgery.
