him, lie devotes his leisure hours, not to debauchery, empty exhibitions, and prurient dancing entertainments, but to the pursuit of Science, for the very ardent love of it alone. To learn that this chieftain also practises with the dissecting knife, and appreciates the secrets revealed by Anatomy, still further throws a light on the remarkable changes that are occurring even in the society of the Princes of Central Iudia. It is not our province to regard a subject like this from a political point of view; but the consideration naturally arises as to whether it would be beneath the diguity of the Government to ask of its various officers the several tastes, bents, pursuits, and qualifications of the potentates with whom they may be officially or privately associated. IIow senseless and childish it must appear for the Chief of Khctree, with all the riches, means, and appliances of princedom around him, to receive at a Durbar, in exchange for his customary tribute of jewels or shawls, similar trash in return. "Why should not select libraries, telescopes, microscopes, clcctric machines, engines, or any of the myriad models or practical instruments, or works of ornamental art, adapted to his tastes and suited to his pursuits, be appropriately selected for the chieftain's choice ?

The frivolities of the native

Durbar, and the disgraceful frauds practised by Toshakana Baboos, bribed by metropolitan jewellers, have culminated in an anachronism. It is full time that such practices should be swept away for ever ; and the approval and good-will of the State towards Native Chiefs displayed in such a manner as to prove that the pursuit of intellectual studies, and the patronizing of Science and Art are more laudable than a vain boast in aigrettes, diamond waist-belts, cloth of gold, jewelled hookhas, and other tawdry fripperies of the sort. The Rajah of Khetree displays an example of intellectual appreciation, and praiseworthy mental training, which we would fain see imitated in, other Native States,

The Eajah expresses his regret that, not having a microscope by him at the time, he was unable to examine the case reported, as minutely as he would otherwise have done.
