The International Symposium on Phytochemicals in Medicine and Food (ISPMF 2015): An introduction

The International Symposium on Phytochemicals in Medicine and Food (ISPMF 2015; cmsmag.shnu.edu.cn/ispmf/), organized by the Phytochemical Society of Europe (PSE) and the Phytochemical Society of Asia (PSA), is scheduled for 26–29 June, 2015, in Shanghai (China). The ISPMF 2015 is jointly organized by Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, Macau University of Science and Technology, Guizhou Medical University, Yancheng Institute of Technology, Fudan University, and Shanghai Normal University. More than 240 scientists from 50 counties have registered to attend the meeting. The international organizing committee and scientific advisory board of ISPMF 2015 are comprised of outstanding scientists from around the globe. The organizing committee of ISPMF 2015 assembled an exciting and diverse program, featuring 12 keynote lectures, 24 invited talks, 60 short oral presentations, and in excess of 130 posters, which will dedicate to create a podium for exchanging the latest research results in the phytochemicals for food and human health. This special issue of Food Chemistry seeks an updated and new knowledge on the chemistry, nutrition and function of food-related plant species. Various food-origin phytochemicals, such as polyphenols, flavonoids, polysaccharides, and essential oils, have received an increased attention due to their considerable health benefits. This special issue consists of 6 sections, namely, dietary polyphenols, carbohydrate polymers, isolation and identification of phytochemicals, bioactivity of phytochemicals, phytochemical analysis, and chemistry of food process. The issue attempts to shape the future direction in research of this important food source. Our purpose is to feature high quality advance research and knowledge contributed by various

research groups of the world, studying the food-related plants. Prof. Dr. Jianbo Xiao (Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University) and Associate Prof. Dr. Milen I. Georgiev (Bulgarian Academy of Sciences) worked as managing guest editors for this special issue. More than 130 submissions were received, firstly screened by the managing editor (or the Editor-in-Chief); in total 88 submissions were assigned to the guest editors for peer review, and 46 papers, out of them, were carefully selected for publication. We hope that the issue will attract reasonable attention and will provoke scientific discussions. Finally yet importantly, we are thankful to Editor-in-Chief Prof. Dr. G.G. Birch for giving us a chance to prepare this special issue compilation as guest editors.
