The Future of the Journal

Journal of Holistic Nursing American Holistic Nurses Association Volume 32 Number 2 June 2014 64–65 © The Author(s) 2014 10.1177/0898010114528878 http://jhn.sagepub.com

It is amazing to remember how far the Journal of Holistic Nursing has come over the past 30+ years. It is even more incredible to contemplate all of our possibilities. I want to share some of my dreams and aspirations for the journal with you. However this is your journal, and I am doing this to provoke your interest in sharing your dreams and aspirations for the journal. I am launching an invitation to share your thoughts and ideas in the form of Letters to the Editor articulating your dreams and aspirations for the journal and for holistic nursing. These are short one- or two-page documents. Once you have prepared your letter, simply go to the website for JHN submissions (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jhn), set up an author account, go to new manuscript submission and select “Letter to Editor,” and follow the directions to submit your letter. If you prefer to share your thoughts and ideas with me in an alternative way, please feel free to do so in the form of an email to me at [email protected]. I will collect these and address them in a future editorial. The Editorial Board of the journal recently met and will be convening every 6 months to advise me on future directions. We have a wonderful group of individuals from all over the world who have demonstrated a commitment to holistic nursing and health care by promoting high quality and positive reputation for the journal. This group can have a significant impact on the goals of the journal along with the contributions of associate editors, reviewers, authors, and readers. I share with the board members in dreams and aspirations of promoting the dissemination of significant knowledge that will have a far reaching impact on changing the quality of health care of all people through the delivery of holistic nursing. The journal will always be concerned with providing the most credible and empowering forms of knowledge and innovative ways of knowing that

advance the cause of care grounded in the understandings and appreciations of the wholeness of human life. Our intentions start with wishing the journal to be a meaningful mode of communication for its members and readers who share a common goal of improving the human condition moving beyond the fragmentation of the current health care system. Furthermore, it is my dream that the journal provide holistic evidentiary knowledge supporting those who are promoting policies and practices that will have a national and global impact on nursing and health care. Some of the goals for the journal for the coming year are the following: 1. Expanding the reach of the journal globally through support of international authorship 2. Determining future directions of the journal through readership engagement and support 3. Refining the scope and aims of the journal for consistency with contemporary issues and advances in the science and art of holistic nursing and health care 4. Supporting the development of writers to improve the quality of manuscripts and potential for publication 5. Building the capacity of reviewers for supportive critical reviews of manuscripts regardless of publication decisions 6. Improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the review process to provide service excellence to authors 7. Developing new areas of publication that address innovations in knowledge development and application in holistic nursing and health care

8. Providing opportunities for development of special issue topics and focused feature areas of the journal I welcome your input in designing and charting a course for the future of the journal. If the journal is to be effective in fulfilling its purpose as an official publication of the American Holistic Nurses

Association and a leading advocate for advancing the science and practice of holistic nursing, it must be responsive to the community it serves. Your participation in determining the future of the journal is vital and appreciated. —W. Richard Cowling III, PhD, RN, APRN-BC, AHN-BC, FAAN
