THE CHANGING SLEEP HABITS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS ' ROBERT A. HICKS AND ROBERT J. PELLEGRINI San lose State Uniuersio Summary.-By collating and inspecting data from previously published studies ( N = 7,958), we noted that over a 20-year period, the median hours of sleep reported by college students had dropped by one hour. Two studies (1, 2) have reported the distributions of the self-reported habitual sleep durations of large samples of college undergraduates. Fortuitously, the data for these surveys were collected at 10-yr. intervals, i.e., during the 1968-69, 1978-79, and 1988-89 academic years, using essentially the same type of questionnaires. CoUectively, these surveys provide the basis for assessing change in the self-reported sleep habits of college students over a two-decade period. To provide comparability between these samples, the data from the two most recent samples (1) were reformatted to conform to the sleep-duration intervals used by Webb and Friel (2) in the first study of this series. The frequencies of students in each sleep duration interval for each sample are listed in the contingency table. The differences between the sleep duration 1172.83, p
