Students get creative with cake BVA President, Robin Hargreaves, was one of the judges of this year’s ‘Sweet anatomy’ cake competition held at the Royal Veterinary College’s (RVC’s) Hawkshead campus, on November 11. The bake-off invited students to create anatomical masterpieces out of cake, biscuits and sweets within six categories – whole animal, gross anatomy, pathology, histology, diagnostic imaging and surgery – and the winning cake in each class went forward to a final blindfold tasting by RVC principal, Stuart Reid. The ‘best in show’ cake was a study of a dog’s head, entitled ‘Rover and out’, by Sarah Weston, Alycia Kowalski and Liz Kolb. Their cake was in a glass dish positioned above a mirror so that the internal structures of the head could be seen while the muscles and soft tissues were presented in icing on the top. As one of the judges of the pathology category, Mr Hargreaves was asked to mark each entry for its originality, execution, scientific accuracy, artistic quality and

originality of title. Entries included ‘Urine trouble mate!’, a cake showing the kidneys of an alpaca with pyelonephritis, and another of an infected quarter in a cow entitled ‘Not just an udder cake’, among others. Mr Hargreaves said that he found the event fascinating: ‘I was privileged to be given the pathology section with 13 entries of astounding accuracy (above) The ‘best in show’ cake, depicting an anatomical study of a dog’s head. (below) ‘Down the cake hole’, an entry and scientific attention to detail. With students clearly paying in the ‘whole animal’ category such assiduous attention to their pathology teaching then this cohort will be fully engaged with other important issues, such as antimicrobial awareness.’ The event raised over £200 for the RVC’s Final Year Revue, with the winning bakers receiving prizes including vouchers, meals and tickets to the forthcoming London Vet Show. doi: 10.1136/vr.f6835
