Preface

Special issue on International Conference on Advances in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics 2013 This special issue of Bioresource Technology comprises the papers presented in the International Conference on Advances in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics 2013 and X Convention of the Biotech Research Society, India organized by the Biotech Research Society, India (www.brsi.in) and Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune, India during November 25–27, 2013. The conference was attended by nearly 650 participants from 22 countries. Scientific deliberations were made by 78 eminent scientists and academicians from Americas, UK, Europe, Australia, Africa and Asia. Poster sessions were organized in six theme areas, viz., Microbial & Industrial Biotechnology, Animal & Microbial Biotechnology, Systems Biology & Bioinformatics, Biotechnology Business & IPR, Nano-Biotechnology, and Plant Biotechnology. The articles published in this issue give insight to new technologies, alternative technologies or processes and improved products for meeting increasing demand of energy, waste treatment and biotechnologically derived products such as enzymes, etc. There are a total of twenty-sixpeer-reviewed papers in the issue, which have been classified in seven different areas. These include Biofuels, which has five papers by Bharti et al. (2014); Gupta et al. (2014); Patel et al. (2014); Goud et al. (2014); Sridevi et al. (2014); Biological Treatment of Wastes, which has three papers by Reddy et al. (2014), Jadeja et al. (2014), Yadav et al. (2014a,b); Bioremediation (three papers by Yadav et al., 2014a, 2014b; Satyavathi et al., 2014; Arora et al., 2014); Cultivation of Algae (three papers by Chandra et al., 2014; Mohan and Devi, 2014; Ummalyma and Sukumaran, 2014); Enzyme Technology (three papers by Madhavan and Sukumaran, 2014; Thomas et al., 2014; Bhalla et al., 2014); Industrial Biotechnology (which has five papers by Singh et al., 2014; Nikhil et al., 2014; Kumar et al., 2014; Chutia et al., 2014; Koutinas et al., 2014); and Microbial Fuel cell (which has four papers by Srikanth et al., 2014; Mohan et al., 2014; Sharma et al., 2014; Chandrasekhar and Mohan, 2014). In general, the articles propose clean and green bioprocesses for alternate energy production, protection of environment and bioprocesses and products development (green technology). The use of microbes as factories for synthesis of several important metabolites and compounds is highlighted in some articles. The Guest Editors of this special issue are thankful to the Editorin-Chief of Bioresource Technology, Professor Ashok Pandey and Publishing Editor Dr. Katherine Eve for providing an opportunity to publish selected peer reviewed papers that were presented at the CESE-2013. Thanks are also due to Mr. Sankara Narayan, Journal Manager and the entire production team of the journal for their valuable support in bringing out this issue. Last but not least, our sincere appreciation to all the reviewers for their invaluable and http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.biortech.2014.05.084 0960-8524/Ó 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
