Special Issue for the Plant Resistance Sustainability International Conference, La Colle sur Loup, France, 16–19 October 2012

This conference has been held under the auspices of the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA, France) in the frame of its metaprogramme Sustainable Management of Crop Health (SMaCH). It has been organized by the editors mentioned below, Isabelle Avelange (INRA Paris) and Arnaud Ridel (INRA PACA Sophia-Antipolis), with the help of De Comm’ & d’Esprit. It was sponsored by the Pôle Européen d’Innovation Fruits et Légumes (PEIFL), the pôle de compétitivité Végépolys, Biogemma, Sakata Seeds and Syngenta. The main challenge currently facing agricultural research, i.e., to find efficient and sustainable ways to produce food for a growing population in a changing world, calls for extensive efforts and cross-disciplinary approaches. The control of pests and diseases appears as a major issue all over the world to increase plant yield and the quality of plant products. In this context, genetic resistance is a preferred approach to efficiently manage crop health with favorable economic and environmental impacts. However, pests have high evolutionary capacities and new pest variants emerge frequently. The sustainable management of crop resistance to pests and diseases thus becomes one of the key issues for research, and is located at the crossroads of plant genetics and pathology, agronomy, population and landscape ecology, management sciences, economy, geography, and sociology among other disciplines. The aim of this conference was to promote knowledge sharing and emergence of novel scientific approaches on this topic among specialists in plant and pathogen genomics, plant breeding, epidemiology, mathematical modelling, agronomy, economy and sociology. The conference gathered 150 participants from 22 countries and included 39 oral presentations. An emphasis was put on the four following topics: the impact of plant disease resistance on the structure and evolution of pathogen populations, the sustainable and integrated breeding and deployment of genetic resistance, how plant-pathogen molecular interactions contribute to our understanding of resistance durability and the social and economic constraints to the use of genetic resistance to pathogen.
