Solving Our Patients’ Nutrition Problems

P

ATIENTS ARE INCREASINGLY more complex and yet, as a profession, we must continue to prove our effectiveness in solving our patients’ nutrition problems. One way in which we can do this is by incorporating the Nutrition Care Process and Terminology (NCPT) into our dietetics practice. Implementing the NCPT leads to consistency in practice and makes outcomes research possible. Adopting the process and terminology empowers us to remain competitive with other health disciplines that use a standardized process and terminology and produce outcomes data.

ACADEMY, MEMBER LEADERS PROVIDE HELP Thank you to our Academy staff and member leaders who serve on the Nutrition Care Process and Terminology Committee. They have developed resources to assist us with teaching about and implementing standardized language within the nutrition care process.

NCPT HAS NEW ONLINE PLATFORM Here are just a few of the many new features of the online NCPT (eNCPT):

1872

It’s easy to navigate. Every page in the new eNCPT edition includes a file path at the top so that users can never get lost. In addition, with the improved toolbar at the top of the screen, users can now easily get to any section of the Reference Manual. A new modern look brings color to the site and includes a simplified version of the nutrition care model. It’s user-friendly: The Scribe tool allows the user to scroll through PDFs on the screen without downloading first. The new online platform follows the layout of the print edition so charts are left intact and information flows in a logical way.

The transition to the new platform is automatic, with minimal service interruption and no need for a new purchase.

The eNCPT is indispensable for students learning the Nutrition Care Process, educators who are teaching terminology for the Nutrition Care Process, and practicing registered dietitian nutritionists and nutrition and dietetic technicians, registered, in all health care settings; RDNs working in research; and software developers working with specific nutrition and dietetics software and the electronic health records. A new website provides ready access to NCPT information for professionals worldwide. Some content, written in other languages, is contributed by international users. The Figure illustrates the nations around the world that are already using the NCPT. Included in the new online subscription eNCPT Reference Manual are terminology pages for the four steps of the Nutrition Care Process: Nutrition Assessment, Nutrition Diagnosis, Nutrition Intervention, and Nutrition Monitoring and Evaluation. Also included are definitions, reference pages, and narrative explanatory content for usage of the terminology including creating Problem, Etiology, Signs/ Symptoms (PES) statements.

TOOLKITS MAKE IT EASY Learn the steps for creating an Electronic Health Record (EHR) using interactive tools as part of an online subscription to the EHR Toolkit.
