SOCIAL ATTITUDE CORRELATES OF SENSATION-SEEKING I N PSYCHIATRIC PATIENTS PAUL R. PEARSON AND BRIAN F. SHEFFIELD Victoria Hospital, Blackpool' Sensation-seeking has been found to relate negatively to Conservatism (2, 3 ) . The Conservatism Scale, devised by Wilson and Patterson ( 5 ) yields, apart from two 'psychological' factors Conservatism vs Liberalism, and Realism vs Idealism, four 'content' factors: Militarism-punitiveness, Anti-hedonism, Ethnocentrism and out-group hostility, Religionpuritanism ( 4 ) . The present study investigated the relationship between the factor scales of the Conservatism Scale (C-Scale), and the 34-item version of Zuckerman's Sensationseeking Scale ( 6 ) for a group of 41 male and 43 female psychiatric out-patients, referred to the Psychology Department for assessment of their neurotic and personality difficulties. They were administered the Conservatism Scale and the Sensation-seeking Scale. The mean age for males was 28.51 yt. (SD = 11.31), €or females the mean age was 25.79 yr. ( S D = 7.98). Pearson correlations were computed between Zuckerman's scale and each of the six social-attitude variables on the Conservatism Scale for both males and females. For males O.Ol), Realthe following correlations obtained: Conservatism vs Liberalism -0.63 ( f i ism vs Idealism +0.21, Militarism-punitiveness -0.39 ( p O.O5), Anti-hedonism -0.64 (9 0.01). Ethnocentrism and out-group hostility -0.59 ( 9 0.01), Religion-puritanism -0.51 ( p 0.01). The correlation of -0.05 of Zuckerman's scale with age was not significant. For females the following correlations obtained: Conservatism vs Liberalism -0.47 ( p 0.01 ) , Realism vs Idealism +0.10. Militarism-plnitiveness -0.14, Anti-hedonism -0.41 ( p 0.01), Ethnocentrism and out-group hostility -0.47 ( P O . O l ) , Religion-puritanism -0.31 ( f ~ 0.05). The correlation of -0.12 of Zuckerman's scale with age was not significant. Farley and Dionne ( 1 ) in a study of scores on the Sensation-seeking Scale and on the Allport-Vernon-Lindzey Study of Values for 40 collcge students found that sensationseekers tended to place importance on aesthetic values and de-emphasize economic values, but no significant relationship was found between sensation-seeking and theoretical, social. political, and religious values. The present study confirms previous find~ngsof a negative relarionship between Conservatism and Sensation-seeking and also dep~cts significant relationships with several social-attirude variables.
