Slaughterhouse on wheels The Swedish meat company Hälsingestintan has announced the launch of a mobile cattle slaughterhouse, which will travel to farms and avoid the need for animals to be transported to abattoirs. The aim, the company says, is to improve animal welfare, reduce transportation stress and produce highquality meat. The mobile slaughterhouse is made up of a number of units containing an area for offices and changing rooms, a trailer with the slaughterhouse itself and a refrigerated trailer to store the meat. The method of slaughter and handling of the animals has been designed by Hälsingestintan and the Department of Animal Health and Welfare at the Swedish University of Agricultural Science, while the vehicle has been developed by the meat company in cooperation with a Finnish company, Kometos. Hälsingestintan says that, with a basic staff of four people, it will be possible to slaughter up to 30 animals per day. ‘This is a very welcome initiative,’ commented Eskil Erlandsson, Sweden’s minister for rural affairs. ‘The development of small abattoirs near the farms has expanded enormously in recent years, which shows that consumers demand meat from animals that have lived a good life and avoided long journeys. This development can now get an even greater boost thanks to mobile slaughterhouses. Swedish farmers and breeders are extremely talented and I welcome all new ideas that improve profitability, quality as well as animal welfare.’
