Sixteenth Conference on the Adrenal Cortex (Adrenal 2014), Chicago, Illinois, June 17–20, 2014

The sixteenth biennial Conference on the Adrenal Cortex (Adrenal 2014) was held at the DoubleTree Chicago by Hilton–Magnificent Mile Hotel in Chicago, IL from June 17 to 20, 2014. The Conference was a satellite of the 95th Endocrine Society Meeting also held in Chicago, and was attended by 139 scientists from 19 different countries and by a representative of the National Adrenal Diseases Foundation, a support group for patients with adrenal-related disorders. The meeting was co-organized by Alexander C. Brownie (University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY), Maria L. Dufau (National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD) and Bernard P. Schimmer (University of Toronto, Toronto, ON). Willy Brownie-Bakhuizen served as Conference Coordinator. Members of the program advisory committee were: Wiebke Arlt (University of Birmingham), Richard J. Auchus (University of Michigan), Felix Beuschlein (University of Munchen), Gary Hammer (University of Michigan), Ian Mason (University of Edinburgh), Stephen Matthews (University of Toronto), Ken-ichiro Morohashi (Kyushu University), Walter L. Miller (University of California), Hironobu Sasano (Tohoku University) and Marion Sewer (University of California, San Diego). The members of the Keith Parker Memorial Award Committee were Richard Auchus, Felix Beuschlein, Gary Hammer, Ian Mason, William E. Rainey (chair) and Hironobu Sasano. Funding was generously provided by: Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development; Office of Rare Diseases, National Institutes of Health; University of Michigan Millie Schembechler Adrenal Cancer Program; GWT-TUD, Dresden; Department of Biochemistry, University at Buffalo; Dean of the School of Medicine, University at Buffalo. The meeting covered a broad range of topics related to the regulation of the adrenal cortex and also featured two memorial lectures

– The Keith Parker Memorial Lecture given by Bernard P. Schimmer (Schimmer and Cordova, 2015) in recognition of his seminal contributions to adrenocortical research (see Rainey, 2015 in these proceedings) and a lecture celebrating the ground-breaking work of the late Ronald W. Estabrook given by Alastair Brownie entitled: “Ron Estabrook: A pioneer in P-450 research”. This special issue of Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology contains peer-reviewed reports of original findings and authoritative reviews that reflect the science discussed at the Conference. The articles are grouped under the following headings: (1) The Keith Parker Memorial Lecture; (2) Receptors and Cell Signaling; (3) StAR and Steroidogenic Cholesterol; (4) Regulation of Genes, Enzymes and Pathways of Steroidogenesis; (5) Adrenal Differentiation; (6) Adrenal-Related Clinical Disorders; (7) The Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Adrenal Axis and Critical Illness.
