Short communications and case reports—Who cares?$

Jakob Nielsen1 described us as information foragers; that is, we decide how to consume information in a way that optimizes our benefits relative to the costs. For example, if a wolf is planning to hunt in a forest that is populated by large and small rabbits; which ones will the wolf go after? We would initially say: the ‘‘large rabbits’’ because they provide more meat. But if the large rabbits are faster and are harder to catch, the benefit decreases. It is much better to eat lots of small tasty bites if tiny bunnies are easier to nab (Jakob Nielsen, see footnote). The real question is therefore not which prey provides the most food, but how we get the most food with the least effort (Jakob Nielsen, see footnote). It is the same for us, informavores. A long article will contain more information, but it will take longer to read. Readers may abandon the article and read shorter, easier pieces elsewhere. In such a consideration, therefore, our new publication, the Leukemia Research Reports is committing to support an open
