Heat shock proteins are believed to play homeostatic functions that help cells sustaining stressful conditions. Gene transfection studies have revealed that consitutive expression of human HSP27 in rodent cells confers a thermoresistant phenotype (1). Genomic and cDNA sequences have been reported for the HSP27 gene from human and rat respectively (2, 3). We report here the sequence of the insert of pH8, a cDNA plasmid contained in a library derived from polyA RNA extracted from Chinese hamster V79 cells after heat shock (4). pH8 was shown to hybridize at high stringency with the human HSP27 cDNA pHS208 (2, 4). The nucleotide sequence consists of 787 nucleotides containing an open reading frame encoding a 213 amino acid protein. The deduced amino acid sequence is 79% and 94% identical to human (2) and rat HSP27 (3) protein respectively.
