Editorial Selected papers from The 7th IEEE International Conference on Systems Biology (ISB 2013) Computational systems biology has become an intensive research topic in the past decade due to the emergence of high-throughput biological experiments. The generated genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics data have provided new ways to decipher the biological systems in a more detailed and comprehensive manner. These research topics have also attracted many leading scientists in Biology, Systems Science, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Control Science and Statistics. Many computational and mathematical methodologies have been developed to meet the request of the unprecedented opportunity. The 7th IEEE International Conference on Systems Biology (ISB2013), organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Hunan University was held in Huangshan, China, August 23rd-25th, 2013. The conference was sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Sciences of CAS (AMSS), Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences of CAS (SIBS), Hunan University, the Computational Systems Biology Society of ORSC (Operations Research Society of China), the Systems Biology Technical Committee of IEEE SMC Society, and also technically sponsored by IEEE SMC Society. The purpose of ISB 2013 was to exchange ideas and approaches by presenting state-of-the-art solutions in this interdisciplinary field, including mathematical, computational, and statistical methods and their applications in various aspects of Systems Biology. In this Special Issue, we collected eight papers covering various approaches to the challenging problems in Systems Biology. In particular, the topics include: sequence-based analyses of genes and their products in plants and in signaling proteins such as G-protein couple receptor in eukaryotes, systems biology approaches in complex diseases such as pancreatic cancer and Alzheimer disease, the system-wide-scale structure features and characteristics in protein-DNA binding and protein-protein interactions, and the analyses of steady states for dynamical biological systems, such as transcriptional regulatory networks and so on. We would like to thank the co-chair of ISB 2013, Professor Xiang-Sun Zhang, and the local organizer Professor Bo Liao for their works in organizing the conference. Zhi-Ping Liu received the BS and MS degrees in Applied Mathematics from Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong province, China in 2002 and 2005, respectively, and a PhD in Applied Mathematics and Bioinformatics from Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China in 2008. He received his postdoctoral trainings in Systems Biology from Osaka Sangyo University, Japan and University of Rochester, USA. Formerly, he worked at the Key Laboratory of Systems Biology, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences as Assistant Professor, then promoted to be Associate Professor in 2010. From September 2013, he worked at Shandong University as Associate Professor. His research interests are systems biology and bioinformatics. In the past five years, he published more than 30 journal papers in systems biology. 127

www.ietdl.org Luonan Chen received the ME and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan, in 1988 and 1991, respectively. Beginning in 1997, he was an associate professor at the Osaka Sangyo University, Osaka, Japan, and then a full professor. Since 2010, he has been a professor and executive director at the Key Laboratory of Systems Biology, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was the founding director of the Institute of Systems Biology, Shanghai University. He

serves as chair of the Technical Committee on Systems Biology of the IEEE SMC Society, and as the founding president of the Computational Systems Biology Society of ORS China. He serves as an editor or editorial board member for major systems biology related journals, e.g., IET Systems Biology, BMC Systems Biology, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Mathematical Biosciences, Journal of the Royal Society Interface, Journal of Theoretical Biology, and Journal of Molecular Cell Biology. His fields of interest are systems biology, network biology, and nonlinear dynamics. In the past decade, he published more than 200 journal papers and two monographs in the area of systems biology.
