This list of 453 books and 74 journals is intended as a selection guide to be used in a library supporting allied health educational programs or allied health personnel in either an academic or health care setting. Because of the impossibility of covering the large number and wide variety of allied health professions and occupations, the recommended publications are focused primarily on the twenty-six educational programs accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association, plus physical therapy, dental allied health, medical secretarial, and nutrition programs. Books and journals are categorized by subject; the book list is followed by an author/editor index, and the subject list of journals by an alphabetical title listing. Items suggested for initial purchase (179 books and 29 journals) are indicated by asterisks. To purchase the entire collection of books and journals (1990 subscriptions) would require an expenditure of about $21,650. The cost of only the asterisked items totals $9,250.

More than nine years ago when we initially undertook the task of compiling a list of recommended books and journals in the allied health sciences, the first thing we did was try to determine the extent of allied health literature. In order to do this, we needed to find out exactly what the term "allied health" meant. After researching the subject extensively, we did find a number of varying definitions; what we did not find was a consensus definition for allied health. With each revision of our list, we have again tried to locate a common definition and repeatedly have been unsuccessful. However, when the congressionally mandated Institute of Medicine Committee to Study the Role of Allied Health Personnel chose not to come up with or search for a consensus definition, we decided that defining allied health is neither feasible nor, perhaps, possible. Instead, the committee chose to describe the common characteristics that define the group and to view the role of allied health as a continued evolution due to the changing nature of health Bull Med Libr Assoc 78(3) July 1990

care, which makes the work of some groups obsolete while providing opportunities for new types of practitioners. The committee further stated that both old and new groups, in spite of their differences, would benefit from coming together under the umbrella term "allied health" [1].

When the congressionally mandated Institute of Medicine Committee to Study the Role of Allied Health Personnel chose not to come up with or search for a consensus definition, we decided that defining allied health is neither feasible nor, perhaps, possible. Allied health has been described as the sleeping giant of the American health care system [2]. Neither the size nor the makeup of this giant is really known. 233

Allied health personnel compose the largest segment of the health care industry, with estimates of their numbers ranging from 1 to 5 million, in as many as 200 professions and occupations. They are also the least known and most underrated members of the health care system. With the exception of medicine, just about all other health-related professions have been classified at one time or another as allied health. A one-word description of allied health is diversity, for its personnel range from on-the-job trained workers to highly educated, skilled professionals employed in a variety of health care settings.

Governmental support of allied health education has literally ranged from feast to famine. After the passage of the 1966 federal Allied Health Personnel Training Act, government funding soared to an annual output of $30 million in the early 1970s and dropped to practically nothing by the mid1980s. Over the past twenty-five years, governmental support of allied health education has literally ranged from feast to famine. After the passage of the 1966 federal Allied Health Personnel Training Act (P.L. 89-751), government funding soared to an annual output of $30 million in the early 1970s and dropped to practically nothing by the mid-1980s [3]. At first glance, it appears that the 1980s were bad years for allied health, and financially, this is an accurate observation. However, during this period, many of the allied health professions have undergone intense selfscrutiny. Not only have they been concerned about the upgrading of education and the standards for accreditation, certification, and licensure, but also about the need for research in allied health sciences. Research creates a defined and organized body of specialized knowledge on an intellectual level of higher learning that is unique and vital to a profession [4-7]. The allied health professions have not had a tradition of research upon which to build, but the quality and amount of their research activities have been increasing, especially during the past four or five years. The present status of the allied health professions is reminiscent of that which existed in nursing fifteen or twenty years ago, when the profession-versus-occupation controversy was rampant. Nursing emerged clearly as a profession in the 1980s. The major event of the 1980s affecting allied health was unquestionably the previously mentioned National Academy of Sciences/Institute of Medicine's (NAS/IOM) eighteen-month study on the role of allied health personnel in health care delivery, which 234

resulted from the Health Professions Training Act of 1985 (P.L. 99-129) [8]. Even though most federal support of allied health education had been withdrawn during the early 1980s, allied health leaders were able to convince Congress that such a large section of the nation's health care work force should not continue to go unstudied and unmonitored. It is a landmark study and the first one carried out on allied health by a major branch of NAS. The study attempted to answer the following questions: What roles do allied health workers perform, and how will those roles fit into a changing health care delivery system over the next fifteen years? What will be the future demand for health care personnel? Should there be regulation of the allied health professions? How should educators prepare allied health practitioners for the future?

The public is well aware of the crises brought on by the lack of nursing personnel, but still seems quite unaware of the danger facing the health care system if adequate numbers of allied health personnel are not maintained.

SCOPE In this study, ten groups of allied health personnelclinical laboratory technologists and technicians, dental hygienists, dietitians, emergency medical personnel, medical record administrators and technicians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, radiological technologists and technicians, respiratory therapists, and speech-language pathologists and audiologists-were selected. These groups were chosen because they are large and well known, span the spectrum of autonomy, and include practitioners who work in a variety of health care settings. In the list of books and journals that follows, we have addressed all but one of these categories-speech-language pathologists and audiologists. The recommendations of the Committee to Study the Role of Allied Health Personnel are set forth, not only to advance the status of allied health, but, more importantly, to preserve the ability of the health care system to confront the problems of the 1990s and beyond. The report pulls together in one place a major set of data on allied health, something that has never been done before. Already, there are shortages of technologists, technicians, and therapists in many parts of the country. The public is well aware of the crises brought on by the lack of nursing personnel, but still seems quite unaware of the danger facing the health care system Bull Med Libr Assoc 78(3) July 1990

Selected list

if adequate numbers of allied health personnel are not maintained. LIST COMPILATION

The guidelines that we have used in collecting data for the 1990 update of this book and journal list are similar to those we have used since we began the project. We have attempted to assemble a collection of books and journals that will support the twentysix educational programs accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association, which are described in the Allied Health Education Directory [9], plus physical therapy, dental hygiene and assisting, medical secretarial, and nutrition. We chose the additional categories because physical therapy is one of the fastest-growing and most important professions in the health care field; its educational programs are accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association. The next two subjects were chosen because of the large number of educational programs available for both dental auxiliary personnel and medical secretaries. We have received numerous requests to add nutrition to our subject categories. In view of the NAS/IOM study, we plan to extend our coverage to speech-language pathology and audiology in the next update of this list. We have excluded the literature of the health professions that are generally considered autonomous: chiropractic, dentistry, medicine, nursing, optometry, osteopathy, pharmacy, podiatry, and veterinary medicine. A distinct literature for some allied health programs does not necessarily exist. For example, educational programs for the physician assistant rely heavily upon books in the basic and behavioral sciences as well as standard medical texts and journals; medical publications can be identified from our list of recommended books and journals for the small medical library [10]. Physician assistant programs also make use of publications in related allied health fields. Programs for the surgeon's assistant and surgical technologist are supported heavily by the literature of perioperative nursing as well as a variety of surgical publications; related nursing titles can be located in our selected list of nursing publications [11]. In general, we have selected books and journals written specifically for allied health personnel, but if a medical book is essential to an allied health discipline, it is included; the same is true for journals. We have put an emphasis on current materials, predominantly of U.S. origin, although some Canadian and a few British publications are also included. All of the books we have selected have been published since 1982, with 86% bearing a publication date of 1987 or later. We have chosen the most current books available because rapidly changing technology has a strong Bull Med Libr Assoc 78(3) July 1990

impact on many allied health professions and occupations. As a result, older books do not appear in this list, but they may have appeared in earlier versions. Obviously, "new" does not necessarily mean "better."

All of the books we have selected have been published since 1982, with 86% bearing a publication date of 1987 or later. We have chosen the most current books available because rapidly changing technology has a strong impact on many allied health professions and occupations. Self-study books, frequently used as teaching tools in allied health education programs, have been included, even though they do not appear in our hospital or nursing lists. We have cited a number of review books, mostly published by Medical Examination Publishing Company; Mosby and Appleton & Lange are also well-known publishers of examination review books. Catalogs and brochures from the American Association of Blood Banks, American Medical Record Association, American Occupational Therapy Association, and American Physical Therapy Association should be used routinely in developing allied health collections. With one or two exceptions, association publications are not included title by title in our list, but we do want to emphasize their importance. Standard medical books and journals should be available to allied health personnel; dental auxiliary personnel should have access to standard dental books and journals. If no basic medical or dental collections exist in academic libraries supporting allied health education programs, access must be provided by means of neighboring health sciences libraries. Again, we set forth our premise that collection development in the area of allied health, the largest segment of the health care field, should be done in the same structured manner as for medicine, dentistry, nursing, or veterinary medicine. Before undertaking an in-depth collection development program in allied health, it is worthwhile to become familiar with the various programs described in the Allied Health Education Directory [12] and to read the report of the NAS/IOM Committee to Study the Role of Allied Health Personnel [13]. Completing these readings makes it obvious how much of the existing collection in a health sciences library can be of use to allied health personnel. The Journal of Allied Health is an invaluable source for keeping up with the current trends. In updating this list, we have received input from librarians, allied health educators, publishers, and 235

book and journal vendors. The final decision on which books and journals to include in the list that follows is exclusively ours, based upon both our experience and the publications themselves. We have tried to choose books that are authoritative in their fields, well organized, effectively indexed, readable, and used by educators in allied health. However, in some allied health areas, it is a matter of identifying rather than choosing; this is especially true for journals, although in a few instances an allied health discipline is covered by only one or two books. As both the quality and amount of allied health research increase, more journals should appear as the result of an accumulating knowledge base.

these lists are evaluative. Current acquisitions lists from health sciences libraries show what allied health publications are being acquired by other institutions. Listings and newsletters from health sciences book and journal vendors are often valuable selection aids for current allied health publications.

We have tried to choose books that are authoritative in their fields, well organized, effectively indexed, readable, and used by educators in allied health. COSTS

We set forth our premise that collection development in the area of allied health, the largest segment of the health care field, should be done in the same structured manner as for medicine, dentistry, nursing, or veterinary medicine. We intend that this list of books and journals be considered only as a guide for creatively developing a collection of allied health literature; it is not to be used as a required item-by-item standard. Any selection list is outdated almost as soon as it is published. Therefore, it is necessary for librarians to monitor the literature of allied health as it is published. Between revisions, this list will continue to be updated on a quarterly basis in a newsletter titled A Major Report, compiled and edited by the senior author [14]. Since 1984, the Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) has contained a list of new nursing and allied health books that are arranged by CINAHL subject headings [15]. It should be remembered that the CINAHL list is not a recommended list of books. Besides our list, there are few up-to-date sources to help the inexperienced individual in selecting allied health publications. A core collection of books and journals on health care administration compiled by the staff of the American Hospital Association Resource Center should be of interest to a number of allied health personnel [16]. Recently, a core collection of approximately 1,000 print and nonprint media in nursing and allied health has been compiled by three librarians from two community colleges that offer nursing and allied health curricula [17]. Nonprint media include both audiovisuals and computerassisted instructional materials. This work was undertaken because the authors felt there might be librarians and health professionals responsible for developing such collections who are not familiar with the extensive range of resources that exist. Both of 236

The bibliographic and price information given is as accurate as we could obtain at the time of publication, but price increases are likely to occur for many of the books and journals over time. Based upon the prices quoted, it would cost approximately $21,650 to purchase the entire collection of books and journals. The 453 books cost about $16,660, and the 74 journal subscriptions for 1990 amount to $5,050. For books from publishers who follow net pricing procedures, we have used a book vendor's prices, which provide more realistic figures for purchasing and budgeting purposes, since most libraries do not purchase directly from publishers but from vendors. Publishers' list prices are noted for all other books. The total cost for the entire collection, or for the individual subject category Physical Therapy (Table 1), includes only the specific books, e.g., items 281, 283, and 305, not the entire series. Subscription prices are institutional rates. Whenever member and nonmember prices occur, the nonmember prices have been used in calculating total costs. The average price per book title is $36.62, and the average price of a journal subscription is $68.30.

The average price per book title is $36.62, and the average price of a journal subscription is $68.30. Items for initial purchase are indicated by asterisks before the titles. To purchase only the asterisked items (179 books and 29 journals), the total cost would be approximately $9,250-$7,250 for books and $2,000 for 1990 journal subscriptions. Due to the diversity of the subjects in this list, most will probably not want to purchase all of the publications but instead will use the list selectively for programs pertinent to their particular situations. Table 1 shows the approximate cost for each subject section in the book list. Overall total figures and average costs for this list are not as Bull Med Libr Assoc 78(3) July 1990

meaningful as those that we compile for the small medical library and for nursing, since it is not likely that all these allied health publications would ever be purchased in toto as a collection.

ARRANGEMENT The books in the list are arranged according to broad subject headings, followed by an author /editor index. For new editions appearing in 1990, we have indicated prices if available when we submitted the manuscript, even though a few were to be released within the next few weeks. If there were a projected 1990 edition later in the year, we have listed it followed by the phrase "In preparation." We have noted new editions due in 1991 but have cited the previous editions if still in print. Several times we have listed 1991 editions as being in preparation; in these instances, the previous editions are out of print. Traditionally, allied health books tend to go out of print faster than do medical books; it is often difficult to obtain this kind of information from some publishers. When a book has more than two authors or editors, the notation "[and others]" is made after the name of the senior author or editor. In the book list, we have tried to note the publisher who is currently distributing the book; in view of various takeovers and mergers that have occurred, the publisher listed on the title page may not always be the current distributor; for example, Wiley allied health books have been taken over by Delmar. This is not actually a problem when books are ordered from a vendor. In the index of authors and editors, only the names of the senior persons are included; coauthors and coeditors are not listed. If the name of an original editor or author is an initial part of a title, we have included that name in the index. Journals are arranged by broad subject categories, followed by an alphabetical title list. We have still not been able to monitor the literature of health care administration, psychology, medical social work, biomedical engineering, and speech pathology and audiology. As previously mentioned, because of the NAS/IOM study, we do plan to incorporate speech pathology and audiology into our next updated allied health list. We have considered having a subject section on gerontology and geriatrics. However, we decided that publications dealing with the elderly probably should continue to be listed under our established subject headings, for example, a book on geriatric nutrition being grouped with other books on nutrition. The section of our nursing list on geriatric nursing contains references to books that would be of value to allied health personnel caring for the elderly. The broad subject headings that we have used are similar to those of previous lists. In some subject areas, relatively few books have been published, Bull Med Libr Assoc 78(3) July 1990

whereas in others-such as dental hygiene, emergency medical technology, and physical therapy-a large number of new titles have appeared during the past two years. There has also been an increase in new terminology books. Choosing books in these areas proved to be most difficult, for there were so many to evaluate.

We reiterate that educators, students, and practitioners in allied health should find adequate informational resources in their libraries to meet research, educational, and clinical needs.

TRENDS If allied health is the sleeping giant of the American health care industry, then certainly its literature holds a comparable position in health sciences libraries and in some academic libraries as well. We reiterate that educators, students, and practitioners in allied health should find adequate informational resources in their libraries to meet research, educational, and clinical 237

needs. We initially undertook the task of compiling a selected list of allied health publications primarily to assist inexperienced selectors in academic libraries, particularly those in community colleges where many allied health programs are located. Over the years, we have realized that informational resources for allied health personnel have been sorely overlooked in health sciences libraries, both large and small. In the 1990s, we believe that the literature supporting the largest segment of the health care industry must become a substantial part of every biomedical collection. We hope that our list of recommended books and journals will continue to be a factor in upgrading allied health collections, in whatever setting.
