Provisional Programme The Conference will deal with the mutagenic effects of environmental agents particularly in so far as they may represent a hazard to man. Plenary lectures will be given on the following topics: 1. Relationship between mutagenesis, carcinogenesis, and teratogenesis. 2. Involvement of repair process in mutation of mammalian cells. 3. Genetic health protection (covering the various exposed sections of the population such as industrial workers, populations living close to large chemical factories, and the population at large). 4. Relative contribution of mutations, chromosome abnormalities and nondisjunction to genetic ill-health in man. Symposia will be organized to cover the following areas: 1. Extrapolation from experimental test systems for the evaluation of genetic risks in man.
402 2. Legislative requirements and industrial response. 3. Molecular mechanisms in the induction of mutations and chromosome aberrations. 4. Critical appraisal of methods in mutagenicity screening, (a) non-mammalian pre-screen systems, (b) mammalian cell systems, (c) cytogenetic methods, (d) metabolic activation methods including host-mediated assays.
Priority contributed paper sessions will be organized to cover the following areas in which the Programme Committee wishes to stimulate the production of papers: 1. Industrial experience of mutagenicity testing. 2. New methods of mutagenicity testing. 3. Low dose effects and the problem of thresholds. 4. Utilization and evaluation of short-term tests as pre-screen procedures, for the detection of mutagens and carcinogens. 5. Interaction of chemical mutagens with each other and with other substances. 6. Metabolic activation of mutagens. 7. Studies on man. 8. Interaction of radiations and chemicals. Contributions in these areas are particularly sought and may be given priority in selection and grouping. The programme committee reserves the right to modify the final programme in the light of future developments, and the number and scope of the contributed papers. Ordinary contributed paper sessions will be arranged to include short proffered papers on any aspect of environmental mutagenesis. Presentation may be oral, or as a poster display, or by written abstract only, depending on the number of submissions. Registration Forms for registration of attendance and submission of contributed papers has been sent to all members of affiliated Environmental Mutagen Societies. Non-members wishing to receive these should write to the Secretary-General, Dr. P. Brookes Institute of Cancer Research, Pollards Wood Research Station, Nightingales Lane, Chalfont St. Giles, Bucks HP8 4SP, England.
