LETTERS TO THE EDITORS

Downloaded by [Deakin University Library] at 19:29 06 November 2015

SatelLife: Partnerships in Global Communication for Health We were pleased to see our open letter on SatelLife reprinted in your Vol.6 No.l issue (pp.37-8), and feel sure your readers will be interested to know about recent progress in the BMA library project. As a result of the sweeping changes in Eastern Europe, as well as our relationships there, we decided to install the first node of a medical document delivery system in Warsaw. To date, there is a very rudimentary system in operation, with which Polish physicians send requests for articles and searches to the BMA using telex . . . and get their responses via slow and ungainly fax transmissions. (It can take hours for a single fax to go through!) In spite of the difficulty of this operation, the BMA reports that 20% of all on-line search requests this year have come from Poland. With the help of a satellite channel donated by Microspace Communication Corporation based in North Carolina, and financing granted by the Alfred Jurzykowski Foundation, SatelLife is working to improve the delivery service. Once installed, it will consist of fax machines, personal computers (with special fax boards and software), the satellite channel, and printers. In Warsaw, a V-sat terminal will receive the data, which will be printed out or faxed to other institutions in Warsaw. The system, though complex, greatly reduces transmission costs, and allows for more control over the quality of the documents received in Poland. We are in the last stages of software development and export licensing, and hope to install the system by the end of July. Considerable interest has been expressed in expanding this project to other Eastern European countries, Romania in particular. We also plan to make similar links available in Africa. Thank you very much for your interest in and support for our work. CHARLES CLEMENTS MD Executive Director, SatelLife 225 Fifth Street Cambridge, MA 02142, USA (Received 4 June 1990)
