ROOT FORMATION

EXTRACTION

OF IMMATURE MOLAR

A

l&year-old boy had been under orthodontic treatment and, 6 years prior to this examination, the left lower second molar had been removed to gain space for eruption of the left lower premolars. At that time the roots of the left lower second molar were only partially formed and the apices were wide open. The patient was now referred for removal of a supernumerary tooth between the left lower first and third molar roots. Radiographs revealed a radiopaque area simulating the root of a tooth with two root canals and partially surrounded by a periodontal membrane and lamina dura. No crown morphology could be identified. It is believed that, during the extraction of the left lower second molar, the dental papillae containing Hertwig’s root sheath were torn off, retained in the socket, and continued the root formation. No treatment was indicated. Recently, Burley and Reece (Br. Dent. J. 141: 315-316, 1976) reported a similar case following traumatic loss of an immature incisor and pointed out possible medicolegal consequences. In such or similar conditions, local curettage may eliminate this problem. J. Lustmann, D.M.D. Hadassah School of Dental Medicine Hebrew University Jerusalem, Israel
