Web scan Staffing levels The Safer Nursing Care Tool (SNCT), which was originally developed in 2007 to help managers set appropriate nurse-staffing levels, has been extensively reviewed and recently endorsed by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). The SNCT focuses on setting establishments and determining safe and appropriate nurse-staffing levels based on patients’ sickness and dependency. It is the only tool of its kind available free to healthcare providers. It is updated regularly to reflect the changing needs of patients, and further developments are in progress to support NICE advice on how to determine nursing requirements on a shift-by-shift basis at ward level. See feature, pages 20-21 Cardiopulmonary resuscitation Joint guidance from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), British Medical Association and Resuscitation Council (UK) on decisions relating to cardiopulmonary resuscitation places even greater emphasis on high quality communication and recording of CPR decisions. HELIX Centre has undertaken for the NHS Leadership Alliance for the Care of Dying People (LACDP), which wrote the new guidelines to replace the Liverpool Care Pathway. The app is based around the five LACDP priorities for care and includes a short training quiz.

Working longer New NHS pension scheme rules come into force in April, and one of the changes is a higher retirement age. To help staff plan for this, NHS Employers’ Working Longer Group will publish a suite a resources to help employees understand and prepare for the implications of working into their late sixties. Registration online The Nursing and Midwifery Council has launched a secure service that allows nurses to register and manage their registration online. Users can view their registration status, update contact details, view and print a statement of entry, submit notification of practice, pay the annual retention or renewal fees, set up a direct debit for annual fee payments, provide equality and diversity information, and give the geographical location of employment. Out for consultation Harmful events The Scottish government is asking for views on proposals to introduce legislation that will require health and social care provider organisations to tell people if there has been an event that has caused them physical or psychological harm as a result of care or treatment. Organisations will have to put effective arrangements in place to demonstrate their commitment to disclose instances of physical or psychological harm. The consultation document outlines the existing approaches to candour, and details proposed requirements regarding disclosure, staff support and training, NURSING MANAGEMENT

reporting disclosable events and monitoring implementation of the organisational duty of candour. The consultation closes on January 14. This would be similar to offences that exist in relation to patients requiring mental health care and adults with incapacity. The proposed offence would cover the wilful neglect or ill treatment

of anyone receiving care in a range of care services.
