Research aims to improve feed efficiency in pig farming The University of Nottingham has secured more than £800,000 of funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Zoetis to undertake a four-year project that aims to improve feed efficiency in pig farming. The university has a longstanding relationship with Zoetis and the new project will build on this partnership. It will focus on studies to help maximise muscle growth of pigs and improve herd health on pig farms. Half of the project’s funding has been awarded as a BBSRC LINK grant, while further funding from the BBSRC will enable the exchange of

staff between the university and Zoetis, allowing them to share knowledge, technology and expertise. The project, which will bring together researchers working on muscle growth and metabolism, pig muscle cell culture and whole-body physiology, could ‘potentially help to benefit farmers across the globe’, said John Brameld, associate professor in nutritional biochemistry at the University of Nottingham. He commented: ‘Improving feed efficiency in farm animals such as pigs is becoming increasingly important in order to ensure their healthy growth and development, and also to help provide an

increasing supply of high-quality meat that the world’s expanding population requires.’ Douglas Harrison, senior principal scientist in global therapeutics research at Zoetis, said that the project gave the company the chance to strengthen its research partnership with the university in the area of enhancing pig performance. ‘We’re excited about the scientific advances that could arise from the exchange of talent between our organisations and the contributions we can collectively make towards improving global food security,’ he said. doi: 10.1136/vr.h329 January 31, 2015 | Veterinary Record | 111
