Reproductive Capacity of German Landrace Boars 1. Gonadal and Extra-gonadal Sperm Reserves
By G. N. Egbunike, W. Holtz, W. Endell and D. Smidt Inhalt: Gewicht und Spermiengehalt von Hoden und verschiedenen Abschnitten des Nebenhodens wurde bei 20 Ebern der Deutschen Landrasse bestimmt. Das Gesamthodengewicht (links und rechts kombiniert) betrug im Mittel 464,34 g. Das Gesamtgewicht der Nebenhoden war 104,94 g und verteilte sich mit 33 %, 15 % und 52 % auf K o p f , Korper und Schwanr. Die durchschnittliche Spermienrahl in beiden Hoden eines Tieres betrug 40,74 x l o 9 , die der Nebenhoden 107,70 x l o 9 . Von denNebenhodenspermien entfielen 1 6 , l % auf d e n Kopf, 10,l % auf den Korper und 73,7 % auf den Schwanz. Hodengewicht und Anzahl Nebenhodenspermien waren miteinander korreliert (r = ( r = 0,85, P < 0,01), i m Gegensatz rur Anzahl der i m Hoden und der i m Nebenhoden enthaltenen Spermien. Contents: The weights of the testes and the different portions of the epididymides as well as the. sperm reserves were measured f o r 20 German Landrace boars. The paired testes weight averaged 464.34 g. Of the 104.94 g total epidigymal weight, the caudae epididymides accounted dor 5 2 %followed by ca u t 3 3 % and corpus ( 1 5 %). ( .) T h e gonadal sperm reserves were 40.74 x 10 per animal while the extra-gonadal sperm amounted t o 107.7 x lo9. Of these, the caudae epididymides accounted for 73.7 % with 79.33 x 10’. The caput and cor us represented only 16.1 % and 10.1 % respectively with 17.45 x 1 O9 and 10.88 x 1 0 . Paired testes weight and extra-gonadal sperm reserves were highly correlated (r = .85, P 0.01) unlike gonadal and extra-gonadal sperm.

With 79.33 x l o 9 sperm, the caudae epididymides contained 73.7 % of the total extra-gonadal sperm reserves of 107.7 x l o 9 . The caput and corpus contained 17.5 % and 10.1 % with 17.45 x l o 9 and 10.88 x lo9 spermatozoa respectively. Although there is quite good agreement with Swierstra’s (1970) findings, the proportion of spermatozoa found in the caudae was found to be higher in this study. This may be due to the fact that all boars had been sexually rested for at least 4 weeks prior to castration. Significant differences were found between zones (P .001) and between animals (P 0.025).
