Participants of the SecondInternational IGF Symposiumin San Francisco interested in the characterization and nomenclature of the insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs) met on WednesdayJanuary 16,199l. It was felt that the nomenclatureproposaladoptedduring the workshop on the IGF Binding Proteins held in Vancouver in June 1989 served its purposeand had found generalacceptanceamongthe investigators aroundthe world involved in IGF and IGFBP research. During the last 2 yr, three more IGFBPs have been discoveredand their amino acid sequencedetermined, thus increasing the total number of IGFBPs thus far fully characterized to six. The following is the consensusdevelopedat the San Francisco meetingon the terminology of the newly discovered IGFBPs. In order to avoid confusion in the literature a recommendation was made at this meeting for all researchersin the field to adhereto the proposeddesignation (Table 1). Finally, in order to avoid confusion in the future it was unanimously agreed to request all investigators intending to further enlarge the IGFBP family to report the finding of any new memberof the IGFBP family to Dr. Stenvert L. S. Drop in order to assureproper nomenclature assignment. The minimal requirement would be a significantly different N-terminal or cDNA sequence.
