The 47th Annual Meeting of the Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgeons was held from May 25th to 29th, 2014 in Banff, Alberta, Canada. The venue was the historic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, located in Banff and part of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks. The meeting was hosted by Dr Robin Eccles from the Alberta Children's Hospital, Calgary, Alberta, supported by a local organising committee. There were well over 400 delegates, with large contingents from Canada, Japan and the United States of America. There were also representatives from 19 other countries, including Australia, Brazil, China, Fiji, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan. The opening ceremony was held at the hotel in the Riverview Lounge, overlooking the Bow Valley River and attended by a Canadian Mounty in red serge uniform and a very excited husky puppy. The conference tour involved a spectacular coach journey through Banff and Jasper National Parks to the Columbia icefield area and the Athabasca glacier. To access the glacier delegates were transported in the unique 6-wheel drive Terra Bus, with heated seats and extra-large, low pressure tyres. Delegates also visited Lake Louise, which was still frozen even in late May. On the way there were several sightings of local wildlife, including Grizzly bears, Black bears, Elk, Bald eagles, Bighorned sheep and Mountain goats. The scientific committee, chaired by Dr. Mark Holterman, selected 58 full length, 83 short oral, 24 PAPS Prize oral presentations and 122 static posters. The prize winners this year were Dr. Justin Wagner for a presentation on “Skin-derived precursors generate enteric-type

neurons in aganglionic jejunum” (Basic Science) and Dr. Layla Shbat for “Benefits of an abridged antibiotic protocol for the treatment of gangrenous appendicitis” (Clinical), with an honorable mention for Dr Shannon Acker who presented a clinical paper on “Tunnelled central venous catheters should not be placed in neutropenic children”. The Guest Assistant Program Committee, chaired by Dr. Cynthia Reyes, selected Dr Marcus Suntay from the Philippines as the 2014 M. James Warden Guest Assistance Program participant. Marcus gave a heartfelt presentation on the challenges in providing pediatric surgical services to the children of the Philippines, many of whom had been injured or had family members affected by Typhoon Haiyan last year. This year's meeting was unusual in having two invited presentations with a historical theme. Dr Takeshi Miyano, from Juntendo University, Japan, gave an entertaining and authoritative presentation on the “History of the Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgeons (PAPS): the second 15 years (1984–1998).” Dr Cynthia Reyes also gave an insightful presentation on 25 years of the Guest Assistance Program, highlighting the history of the program and the benefits that flow, to participants, their patients and the association as a whole. Dr. Reyes also bestowed a 25th anniversary commemorative award to Dr. Warden's wife, Mrs Jane Warden, and their daughter, Mary Warden Keene. The Gans Memorial Lecture was given by Mr Kevin Van Tighem, recently retired Superintendent of Banff National Park, on Banff's wilderness icons: grizzly bears and wolves. Kevin gave an entertaining presentation of the problems of humans having to cohabit with predators and how competition for both space and food may lead to conflict. It was perhaps surprising that there were estimated to be only 25 to 70 wolves in the Banff National Park, in part due to farmers concerns over loss of livestock and their unprotected status. In contrast, grizzly bears remain protected and are estimated to have a current population of over 700 in Alberta alone. Kevin eloquently described one of his own close encounters, fortunately peaceful, with a grizzly bear and her cubs.
