n 10 September 2013, the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) New Investigator Committee hosted their third annual New Investigator Symposium in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States alongside the American Heart Association Council for High Blood Pressure Research Scientific Sessions. As is customary for this event, the symposium was entirely organized and carried out by New Investigators and aimed at providing a welcoming and supportive environment for scientific discussion and collaboration. It is noteworthy that this year marked the initiation of Working Groups within the ISH New Investigator Committee (for the current membership see Table 1). Working group members were heavily involved in the execution of the symposium, and their efforts were critical in ensuring the success of the event. The symposium was a free event consisting of a full day forum for new (under 40 years of age) scientists and clinicians in training who have an interest in hypertension and cardiovascular disease. The day started off with an introduction by ISH New Investigator Committee chair Maciej Tomaszewski and consisted of 30 oral communications and more than 90 posters covering all aspects of research in hypertension and cardiovascular disease. The highlight of the symposium was a keynote lecture delivered by Dr Jane Reckelhoff (University of Mississippi Medical Center) who spoke on the challenges that young investigators in hypertension currently face. Her presentation, entitled ‘OMG! From Sequester and Beyond: Am I Going to Make it as a Scientist?’ included a comprehensive examination of challenges and opportunities for new scientists. Although the talk focused on the US research system, the advice was universally applicable. In particular, the importance of planning, and finding appropriate mentors were highlighted as critical to future success. Dr Reckelhoff’s thoughts in this area were warmly received by all attendees and enhanced the interaction and conversations between attendees. The day concluded with an awards ceremony acknowledging the best oral and poster presentations (Fig. 1). Our awards consisted of nine travel grants as well as two ISH New Investigator Committee Poster Awards (winners: Katrina Binger and Karla Haack), one ISH New Investigator

Committee Oral Award (winner: Richard Wainford), and the ‘Jane Reckelhoff Award of the ISH New Investigator Committee’ awarded to Krupa Savalia for the top scoring presentation of the day. Throughout the symposium, activities were chronicled via social media (Twitter and Facebook) by members of the media Working Group. Moreover, several video interviews were conducted with award winners and published to Youtube as ‘ISHCasts’. The feedback from the symposium has been overwhelmingly positive, and we look forward to the next New Investigator Symposium that will take place in Athens, Greece in June 2014 in conjunction with the 25th Scientific Meeting of the ISH/European Society of Hypertension. We will look to build on the successes of our previous symposia and continue to promote the best young scientists in the field of hypertension.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The 2013 ISH New Investigator Symposium would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors: Data Sciences International (DSI), Daiichi-Sankyo, Nature Publishing Group and Omron. The New Investigator Committee would also like to thank all of the new investigators and Working Group members who assisted in the grading of abstracts and session moderation as well as all attendees. Finally, we would like to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of Helen Horsfield and Milton Magill in support of this exciting day. D.B. is supported by a Heart and Stroke Foundation/ Pfizer Canada postdoctoral fellowship.
