Reductive Surgery of Unresectable Lung Cancer: A Case Report .......................................................................................... .......................................................................................... H.TAKITA, M D The only effective therapy for non-small-cell lung cancers has been surgical resection. In the present study a patient with unresectable adenocarcinoma of the lung was treated by chemoimmunotherapy and surgery, and has been doing well for 19 months following surgery. The case is presented as an example of treatment of advanced lung cancer by combined modality approach.

INTRODUCTION With . progress in chemotherapy and immun th rapy of tumors, a concept of “reductive surgery” was introduced [Carter and Soper, 1974; Merrin et al, 19771. A patient with unresectable lung cancer was treated by a combination of chemoirnmunotherapy and surgery. He is alive more than one year since surgery without recurrence, and the case is presented as an example of a new approach to treatment of advanced lung cancer.

CASE REPORT A 50-year-old man noted increasing cough for eight months. One week prior to admission t o the Roswell Park Memorial Institute a right lung lesion was found. The chest X-ray film showed a large round lung lesion in the right upper lobe. Physical examination and laboratory studies showed no evidence of distant metastasis. Bronchoscopy on July 15, 1976, revealed a lesion in the right upper lobe and cytology of bronchial brushing was adenocarcinoma.
