Letter to the Editor Re: ‘Cradle cap’ in puppies Thanks to Danny Scott for describing ‘Cradle cap’ in puppies, a self-limiting condition of very young puppies characterized by ‘whitish, mildly adherent scale’ with a dorsal distribution.1 This strange condition has also been documented in France, where breeders refer to it as ^tes de lait’, which translates literally as ‘milk crusts’. ‘crou Some breeders believe it is due to trauma. diIn a special issue of the French journal Pratique Me cale et Chirurgicale de l’Animal de Compagnie, which was dedicated to canine pyoderma, this disease was included in an article entitled ‘Les pseudopyodermites’ (pseudopyoderma).2 We called it ‘juvenile pyoderma of niles des tre s jeunes newborn puppies’ (‘pyodermites juve chiots’ in French). I examined several cases in the 1980s where the lesions were present on the rump (Figure 1) and, less commonly, on the face (Figure 2). I had the opportunity to

take one small biopsy from the rump area of one puppy. Histopathological findings included superficial, nonfolliculocentric, parakeratotic crusting and a diffuse, nonspecific superficial dermal inflammation. Bacterial culture was not performed. I have no idea what this condition is and no better proposal than calling it ‘pyoderma (or pseudopyoderma) of newborn puppies’.
