Raising awareness of biosecurity on farms A NEW film that aims to raise awareness of farm biosecurity has been produced as an e-learning tool by Lantra, the UK’s Sector Skills Council for land-based and environmental industries. The film gives practical examples to farmers of how they can improve biosecurity to safeguard the health of their animals and reduce the risk of disease. It covers areas such as how disease spreads, livestock movements and handling fallen stock. Lantra worked closely with the Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales

in creating the film, which was launched at the Royal Welsh Show in July by Rebecca Evans, the deputy minister for farming and food in Wales, and Christianne Glossop, the Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales. Professor Glossop said that raising understanding of biosecurity was one of her key priorities: ‘Biosecurity is our first line of defence against serious notifiable infectious diseases. It should be a vital part of daily life, helping to ensure that animals stay healthy and that businesses are profitable.’
The Welsh Government ran a survey at the Royal Welsh Show to find out how biosecurity is viewed and applied within the farming community. The results will be used to help the Welsh Government understand the current biosecurity challenges being faced on farms. n The new biosecurity film can be viewed at http://learning.foodanddrinkskills.co.uk/ course/view.php?id=10 doi: 10.1136/vr.h4243
