Pushing boundaries and creating opportunities

T

he British Association of Urology Nurses (BAUN) is delighted to partner once again with BJN to bring you this Urology Supplement. BAUN was founded in 1995 with the aim of developing urological nursing and supporting urology nurses. BAUN is not just for specialist nurses, it is for all nurses registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) who have an interest in urology. We also welcome unregistered nurses, assistant healthcare practioners and those outside the NMC, who can become associate members. As it has grown, BAUN has forged links with the Department of Health, various publishing groups, other nursing organisations, universities, pharmaceutical companies and charities. We represent urological nursing and patient care in an array of forums—from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to national audit and research programmes, advisory groups, national guidelines and forums for all areas of practice, including urological cancers and benign conditions. It is a real opportunity to raise the profile of urological nursing and to bring the skill and experience of urology nurses to the fore. One such collaboration is the Cancer Nursing Partnership (CNP) which is a partnership of organisations brought together to influence cancer care, and it is currently developing a strategy to ensure the implementation of the Recovery Package (National Cancer Survivorship Initiative (NCSI), 2014) to assist people living with and beyond cancer. BAUN continues to push the boundaries and create opportunities for all nurses in urology by supporting, encouraging, and providing professional development opportunities. We continue to work closely with our urological surgeon colleagues and are part of UrologyUK We have our own journal, the International Journal of Urological Nursing (IJUN) (free to BAUN members) and publish a quarterly newsletter packed with news, reviews and updates. The BAUN Council and Education Committee are committed to providing a broad range of study days to meet our members’ needs and reflect the diversity of urological nursing. If you feel there is a subject area which you would like the Education Committee to consider please contact us. Over the years, thanks to the enthusiasm of its members and the hard work of those who have served on the council, BAUN has developed and grown into the vibrant organisation it is today. The inaugural Annual Conference was held in 2001 and remains the highlight of the BAUN year. The 2014 BAUN Annual Conference and exhibition will take place in Glasgow on 24–25 November. This year’s programme offers sessions on a wide range of subjects,

with highlights including sessions on the Apollo Nursing Resource—demonstrating the value of your service (http://www.apollonursingresource.com), managing testicular pain, the role of chemo/radiation in muscleinvasive bladder cancer, a debate on current active surveillance protocols and a discussion on Certification for specialist nurses (the American approach). On the second day, the programme divides into two subsections on oncology and benign urology, with expert speakers covering each area. Topics include sex and intimacy, interstitial cystitis, stone disease, palliative care, the Recovery Package for cancer patients, and much more. We are delighted to offer delegates pre-conference workshops on 23 November 2014 that will focus on: urodynamics, flexible cystoscopy, TRUS and prostate biopsy, sexual dysfunction and radiology for nurses (including an IRMER radiation safety certificate for referrers). The conference also provides an opportunity for members to showcase their own audits, service developments and research with poster presentations. In addition to the fully-comprehensive educational programme we have an excellent exhibition from our industry and charity partners who will be delighted to update and support you with regard to their products. Members of council will be on the BAUN stand every day. Please come and talk to us, tweet us or check our Facebook page. BAUN is your organisation and we can only meet the needs of members if we know what is important to you. As a result of the positive feedback we received last year, we are running ‘Meet the Editor’ sessions again this year. This is your chance to come along and talk to Rachel Leaver, IJUN and BAUN Newsletter Editor, and Jerome Marley, IJUN Associate Editor. This supplement demonstrates the diverse areas covered by urology. I hope you are encouraged to consider joining BAUN or, if already a member, standing for Council and working with us to continue developing the specialty and maintaining the highest standards in the practice of urological nursing and BJN urological patient care. Become a member at www.baun.co.uk. To view the full conference programme and to register visit: www.eventsforce. net/baunconf2014.To book your one-to-one session with the editors to discuss an idea for a publication, please indicate this on the application form.
