Purpose of the Conference: 2015 Transatlantic Airway Conference The Transatlantic Conference (TAC) on lung diseases is held annually, and is now in its 30th year. The general purpose of the meeting is to review recent advances in lung biology. The specific objectives of the conference are, first, to summarize current knowledge and suggest new investigative approaches to enhance our understanding of fundamental mechanisms underlying a well-focused aspect of lung biology. Second, the conference aims to assemble a multidisciplinary group of scientists from within and outside the pulmonary research community in this area of lung research. Finally, a major aspect of the conference is to encourage exchange of ideas among investigators in different countries. The 30th conference on “Mechanisms of Exacerbation of Lung Disease” successfully addressed these
aims. Under the chairmanship of Laurent Nicod and Jay K. Kolls, a group of leading experts in the field discussed recent advances in the mechanisms underlying exacerbation of asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, with the potential to define common pathways that may represent targets for therapeutic intervention. This symposium report formed the basis of these productive discussions.
