Purpose of the Conference The Fifth Transatlantic Airway Conference was held in Lucerne, Switzerland, in January 1990. As in previous years, the purpose of this conference was to review an important aspect of airway function in health and in disease and to foster a productive dialogue between basic scientists and clinicians. This year's air topic was "Pulmonary Epithelial Growth and Repair." It provided a timely opportunity to present the current knowledge on the control of growth and repair of pulmonary epithelium and to provide a forum for a multidisciplinary approach to this problem. The relevance of this topic is obvious, not only because it is directly related to the pathogenesis of bronchial carcinoma but also because epithelial cell proliferation, as part of the repair process, plays a role in many pathologic conditions affecting the airways. Under the skillful and charismatic guidance of Jerome S. Brody, a group of scientists, acknowledged as leaders in their respective fields, identified the basic processes involvedin the control of cellproliferation under normal and under pathologic conditions. The heavy reference to investigational tools and concepts derived from molecular biology was the expression of the importance of this ap-

proach in this field. The presentations, which stimulated lively and productive discussions, are published in this supplement to provide both clinicians and scientists with an up-todate reviewof general concepts in cell growth and repair. We would like to thank the following participants: S. A. Aaronson, G. Ailhaud, J. C. S. Bergh, N. M. Bleehen, E. Brambilla, A. Clement, P. M. Comoglio, F. Cuttita, C. P. Emerson Jr, R Groner, C. C.
