Public Lecture New ways to fight cancer: stirring our defences against infection into action Presented by Professor Ian Frazer Translational Research Institute, Brisbane, Australia Wednesday, 26 November 2014 1800–2000 (presentation from 1800 and refreshments from 1900) New Law Building, Lecture Theatre 101 Two new drugs are now available that wake up our immune system to fight and even cure some varieties of cancer. These drugs are proof that the body’s immune system can be used in the battle against cancer. Prof Frazer’s lecture will review why cancers can be seen by the immune system, why they often are ignored by our defences, and what we can now do, and will do in the future, to make our defences against cancer work better. Professor Ian Frazer AC is Chief Executive Officer and Director of Research of Translational Research Institute in Brisbane. In this role, Professor Frazer heads an expert cohort of over 650 researchers from four leading medical research institutes. Internationally renowned for the co-creation of the technology for the cervical cancer vaccines, Professor Frazer began his career as a renal physician and clinical immunologist in Edinburgh, Scotland before emigrating in 1981 to Melbourne. He continued his clinical training and pursued studies in viral immunology and autoimmunity at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. In 1985, Professor Frazer accepted a teaching post with The University of Queensland and was appointed Director of The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute in 1991. In early 2011, Professor Frazer relinquished directorship of the Institute to commence in-post as CEO of the TRI. He retains an active research program at the Institute in immune responses to cancer and cancer immunotherapy. Professor Frazer was awarded the 2005 CSIRO Eureka Prize for Leadership in Science and was selected as Queenslander of the Year, and Australian of the Year in 2006. He was also awarded the 2008 Prime Minister’s Prize for Science, the 2008 Balzan Prize for Preventive Medicine, the 2009 Honda Prize and in 2011, was elected as a Fellow of the esteemed Royal Society of London. In 2012, Professor Frazer was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
