PSYCHOMETRIC PROPERTIES OF BRADBURN'S AFFECT BALANCE SCALE AMONG ELDERLY PERSONS ' G . I. J. M. KEMPEN

University of Groningen Summary.-Some psychometric properties of the Affect Balance Scale have been tested on a random sample of 354 elderly people in the Netherlands. Internal reliability estimates were comparable with prior ones, and the 8-wk. test-retest reliability is reasonable for these 5-item measures. Bradburn's Affect Balance Scale (1) is used to measure over-all psychological well-being. The scale consists of 5 positive and 5 negative items; three scores can be generated: positive affect, negative affect, and affect balance. Some psychometric properties of the positive and negative affect scales were tested in a randomly selected sample of 354 elderly Dutch people. The descriptive statistics for the sample were recently described (2).The table presents the minimum and maximum scores, means, standard deviations, reliability estimates (Cronbach alpha) and the 8-wk. test-retest reliability for both positive and negative affect scales.
