Proteinase Inhibitors and Biological Control Illrd International Symposium Selected Contributions

June 23-27,1991 · Brdo, Slovenia Edited by Hans Fritz, Karin Luppertz and Vito Turk PREFACE

The Illrd International Symposium on Proteinase Inhibitors and Biological Control held in BRDO/Slovenia from June 23 - 27, 1991 brought together scientists from 19 countries under very special historical circumstances. Besides the scientific progress in their particular research area the participants could this time experience the celebration of the birth of a new state, Slovenia, and the start of militant blows in a most friendly ethnic group which had developed a deep desire for independence (cf. the CLOSING REMARKS on the following page). Held each second year, the Symposium is complementing the Gordon Research Conferences on Proteolytic Enzymes and their Inhibitors. The data presented in 38 lectures and 36 posters compiled most recent results and lead to lively exchanges of views and plans for future research activities in this rapidly expanding field of biochemistry and molecular biology. This Special Issue contains a selection of papers presented either as lectures or posters during the Illrd BRDO Symposium. The organizers and editors would like to express their sincere thanks to the authors for their valuable contributions. The organization of this Symposium and the publication of the papers were made possible by financial support from the - Jo2ef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia - International Office of the Kemforschungsanlage Julien, Julien, FRG - Ludwig-Maximilians-University (SFB 207), Munich, FRG The organizers appreciate this generous support very much.

"CLOSING REMARKS" to the Illrd BRDO SYMPOSIUM

Since I, Vito TURK, was prevented by the tragic events in our country to close this Symposium regularly, I take the liberty to quote from letters received after the Symposium: "I am very thankful for all you did for us and I hope cordially that the situation in a short time will be clearly independent for your country. We are following all news on the Austrian TV with strong sensitivity and great sympathy. Whenever I can do something for you let me know. I hope via DuSan to stay in contact with you." "I have just returned to Philadelphia and I want you to know how much I appreciate your heroic efforts to see us to safety during the tragic events of last week. I have been following the news closely and if there is anything I can do here in the United States, please let me know. Thanks again for a most scientifically interesting Symposium. I assure you that my political lessons were also well learned." "I have now returned safely to Tokushima. We have been very lucky because our minibus was the last which could pass the border. I should like to thank you for helping us to pass the border and for having given me the opportunity to present my work at the symposium. I am very sad to hear about the difficulties in your country. Please tell me what I can do for you. I hope that I shall see you again soon in Japan." "Thank you for inviting me to the Illrd International Symposium on Proteinase Inhibitors at Brdo. Even though the last part of our trip was quite startling in its intensity, I am happy that I had an opportunity to see the beauty of your country as well as the sociability and energy of its people. Thank you also for your efforts to provide those of us who came to the meeting from other countries with transport across the border to Austria at a critical moment. My husband and two sons (ages 9 and 11) were extremely appreciative!" "It was a privilege to have been in Slovenia last week. Thank you for organising an excellent meeting and for everything you did on Thursday to see us to the border. I hope for a speedy and satisfactory resolution of the difficulties." "I am writing to thank you all again for the remarkable care you took for my safety and that of the other foreign participants at the Illrd Brdo Symposium....You could have dropped us at Kranj or another railway station and left us there alone, and gone to protect your families and homes, but instead, you remained to help us, some of you in your personal vehicles....! will always remember the Illrd Brdo Symposium, it was in every way special, including the highest quality science, and because it marked the beginning of a new country, too! And I will never forget any of you, for your kindness and bravery." Ljubljana, March 1992
