Much of the glamour of surgery in recent years has fallen to the cardio-vascular surgeon. Such dramatic advances as efficient heart-lung machines, synthetic and homograft valves, by-pass grafts to the coronary vessels and, above all, cardiac transplantation, have constantly kept this speciality in the limelight. In the meantime there have been considerable advances in cardiac radiology and other techniques of sophisticated investigation. The second edition of this slim volume, written by two distinguished vascular surgeons at the Glasgow Royal
Infirmary, provides the basic details of interest to students nurses and general practitioners in this specialized branch of surgery. There are preliminary chapters which deal with the anatomy and physiology of the cardio-vascular system, together with haemodynamic principles and sympomatology in heart disease. The modern techniques of investigation are then described, together with standard surgical procedures and post-operative management. The second part of the book deals with the investigation, pathology and treatment of the common diseases of the peripheral arteries. There are useful appendices on common E.C.G. patterns and on acid-base balance and blood gas analysis. The book is clearly written, illustrated by clear line diagrams and X-rays, and can certainly be recommended as a useful introduction to this important surgical field.
