EDITORIAL

Professor Alan Pearson, Founder of the Joanna Briggs Institute Professor Alan Pearson founded the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) in 1996 in collaboration with the University of Adelaide and the Royal Adelaide Hospital. This strong academic-practice nexus served as the bedrock and guiding force for the next 17 years, as Professor Pearson proceeded to nation build and form the internationally prestigious and vital Joanna Briggs Collaboration (JBC). The JBC is a research and practice-oriented network, the members of which constantly strive to realize the JBI vision of improving global health through evidenceinformed practice based on best available evidence. Deeply rooted in practice, Professor Pearson understood the necessity of embracing diverse forms of evidence. This pluralistic notion of evidence ranges from rigorous research focusing on feasibility, appropriateness, meaningfulness and effectiveness, to expert opinion and clinical expertise. The very nature of health care demands that all forms of evidence be given full consideration, as evolving health-care issues with which clinicians must grapple often have no formal research base. Through Professor Pearson’s wise and studied perspective, the JBI approach, software and resources were built to include the varied and valued forms of evidence. Through Professor Pearson’s vision, JBI not only supports the creation of the highest form of evidence—

namely, the systematic review—but also provides decision support in the form of Best Practice Information Sheets, Evidence Summaries and Recommended Practices to inform clinicians at the point of care. Transferring evidence into practice, while necessary, is still not sufficient, which Professor Pearson recognized. Through programming, structures and processes, JBI supports evidence utilization, as this crucial component ensures traction and sustainability of best practice, leading to improved patient and family outcomes. We are all wiser due to Professor Pearson’s wisdom. We are all united by his vision. JBI and the JBC continue to contribute to science, which informs practice, and ultimately improves global health—for which we are all grateful.
